FAST SDHC Memory for the EX1

You know what really amazes me is how you can swap cards without even removing the Kensington reader. Just pull the SD card out and push a new on it, the EX1 just acts like you are swapping SxS cards. Its even less wear on the camera...

and I'd MUCH MUCH MUCH rather a slower off load in post (still very fast though) than have to worry about backing up and formating in the field.

You're the man bro!

Hey, that's great news on the SanDisk 16GB Ultra II 15MB/s.

One could buy TEN of these 16GB cards and pocket $200 USD for the price of ONE 16GB SxS card! LOL

You're right about off-loading in the field, it sucks.
I'd rather deal with the longer transfer to the PC later when I can walk away and not worry. Also, to have ten of these 16GB SDHC at your disposal is going to be great.

Hey, your the man, your the one who found the Kensington reader weren't you? Which in my books was the most important find.

Ok, here is a first draft I rushed out tonight to get the photos online to show people what it looks like. I wrote a lot of dribble at the start for those not as familiar with the back storey so you might want to just go to the photos lower down.
Hopefully this doesn't kill my internet connection....

Thanks GuyB.
Actually, Alister from the "other" (LOL) forum discovered it worked in the EX3 with the Transcend SDHC cards (Which these cards are NOT 100% w/o errors with the Kensington).

I do believe I was the first to report the Kensington worked in the EX1 with the new SanDisk 16GB Extreme III 30MB/s version SDHC , and the 4GB SanDisk Ultra II 15MB/s version SDHC.

You discovered that the SanDisk 16GB Ultra II 15MB/s version SDHC works equal to the smaller 4GB version. This is EXCELLENT news, escpecially a cost of only $60 USD!

Thanks for the detailed report! It looks great. You are "spot on" with your details.

I believe in the next two weeks or less we will hear a report on the new SanDisk 32GB Ultra II 15MB/s version SDHC. They only cost $150 USD!

Folks-
Just tried a Transcend SDHC 8GB class 6 card in the kensington reader in an EX3, received the error message that 'cannot format, media needs to be restored'
any ideas? I thought that this was a proven combination from reading the threads here
thanks

I dunno bout Transcend, but the only THOROUGHLY tested and proven card is the Sandisk Ultra IIs based on my readings here...

Yes, there have been some reports of issues with the transcend cards.

Right now, it's the SanDisk Ultra II 15MB/s. The 16GB and 4GB versions have been tested.
Also, the 16GB SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s has also been tested.

Those Transcends are a little of a mixed bag so far, some have reported excellent results with over 50fps overcranking reliable while others like you Bill comment on an occasional issue. As we have had nothing but success with the Sandisk's this is all we are 'recommending' from our 'research' ;-)

PS: I had a little scare today as I had a KxS (Kensington x Sandisk) combo in and when I powered up the camera it told me the media needed to be formated. Oh I thought. Formatted and even recorded on it fine. Later I found this was a new card after all so of course it needed formating... (I thought it was the card I had been testing before so wouldn't need formating). KxS maintains its faultless performance :-)

GuyB and Stevet thanks for all your thorough testing and results. I have just ordered my kingston/ultra II combo to test. However, first I must upgrade the firmware. Any tips from anyone or a thread on it, downloaded and read the instruction but just want to make sure I dont do anything to my beloved ex1.

Thanks again

Excellent work. Thanks for all of the time and effort (and money) you guys have invested. I just ordered the combo.

I am shooting a 10 day remote rafting trip in Nov, and I was scrambling to find a power solution for my MacBookPro to let me dump SxS in the field over the 10 days. Now all I will have to charge are the camera batteries. I will throughly test the combo for my needs, then if all is well, I will order a dozen 16gb (or 32gb if available) sd cards. This is AWESOME!!!

Thanks vcfilms.
It's hard for anyone to give you a blessing without a disclaimer... LOL

Remember, no one here is responsible if things go south.

You can always send your camera in for the upgrade.

Now, having said that, it's relatively easy.

Do not use the "normal" USB port on the camera. Next to this port, under a cover held by two screws is the service access USB port.

Follow step 3 carefully on page 10 which will have you power cycle the camera before starting the second file. Also, you can tell the software is finished by the "Installed Successfully" message AND the graphics that has gears turning (lol, kind of cool looking) will also stop moving.

Remember to do these in order: first> PMW-EX1_1.10_0530.zip,
then > PMW-EX1_1.11_0531.zip

The 1.11 software will not show until the very end. You will never see version 1.10 appear even though you installed it first.

One more question for you guys. What are the advantages if any of using the Extreme III 30mb/s 16GB card over the Ultra II 15mb/s card?

Thanks so much

ok thanks for the quick response stevet. I wouldnt blame anyone for me destroying my camera except myself which is why I'm asking for any insight before I go ahead with it. I appreciate your help in everything here.

With this combo, there probably is not much difference when used in the EX1 or EX3.

The new Extreme may transfer via SDHC card reader on your PC just a "little" faster.
The card claims 30MB/s, but it's more like 20MB/s transfer.'

My understanding is to access the 30MB/s data rate, additional coding must be written for the controller. SanDisk worked with Nikon to allow the 30MB/s to work with their new D90.

Since the Ultra II is HALF the price, it MAY be a good choice.

yeah cause at like half the price for the 16GB card, I think the Ultra if all is working seems like the choice for me. The Ultra seemed to work for you from 1 fps to 40, correct?

Thanks

The combo works and is ONLY recommended with HQ or SP modes. If you want to overcrank (slo-mo), throw in your SxS card.

The only reason we overcranked with this combo using 40FPS at 24P, we wanted to test how much headroom we would have using this expresscard/SDHC combo.

Since it overcranks (without error) 24P (S&Q) mode at 40FPS, this calculates to around 8.3MB/s max.
HQ mode max is 5MB/s, so this lets us know we are not "hanging on the edge" and have decent headroom for HQ modes.

ok, sounds good. I can stick to my sxs for the overcrank for sure. Thought one thing that might be useful would be these 16's for timelapse stuff at 1fps as I can get long recording times. Is undercrank on the "edge" too or is it just over?

undercranking to 1fps could a could probably be done with any SDHC card ;-)

yes, its overcranking that pushs the bandwidth harder.
