batch capturing taking a long time to start up

hey guys, i was wondering if you could give me some advice to speed things up. whenever i batch capture clips in final cut, a loading bar always comes up first that says building list of used media. it takes a few minutes to build this list and is somewhat annoying so i was wondering first off what it is and secondly if there is any way to cut down on the time it takes to load. thanks for any help, hopefully that made sense

Yes, how long is the list of clips and how fast is your system? Obvious answer is to batch capture using smaller lists.

i just do one tape a time and most tapes have anywhere from 10 to 40 clips. I work for a football team and we have the last two season of footage and sequences saved under one project so im not sure if that would make a difference. The computer is a year old mac pro that is hooked up so i dont think speed is too much of an issue. The weird thing is that when the computer is "building list of used media" it always is scanning through clips that have been used in previous sequences. thanks for taking the time to read this

So are you selecting all the clips in your browser before you capture? If you select every clip you have and then tell it to batch capture, it has to sort through and figure out which clips are already there and which ones actually have to be captured.

no, i select the option for offline clips only. for some reason it still scans through a lot of the clips that already exist

Ah. You're asking FCP to do the sorting for you, and that's probably what's dragging you down.

Try this: when you log a new tape, and I assume that you make a new bin in the browser for that, try actively selecting the new bin in the browser, and then go to the File dropdown menu and tell it to batch capture. That way, FCP knows only to pay attention to the bin, or to the clips, that are selected.

thanks alot for all the help. that definitely sounds like it will be the solution. ill be in the office again on sunday so ill let you know. thanks again
