Feature Film Trailer shot with HVX200

Looks really cool man. Some of the shots at the beginning looked a little under, but heck, shot pretty nicely. Good production value.

What was the budget for this?

very good story. I turned up my brightness too, but maybe it's just the trailer. But very good looking movie, congrats.

Excellent! Great sound! Yea, a little underexposed on several shots but not too big of a deal as it was the only problem I found. Great pace too.

I have the same headphones and Event monitors. Did I say your sound was solid? :)

BTW, I recognized the "cinnamon roll" and "see, you guys don't know anything about women" guy from the hot breakfast bar commercial :)

As far as the dark clips... this could be the problem:

I'm not sure if any of you are also cutting on FCP and have come across the 'gamma' issue... Anyway it seems that Apple and FCP have changes the gamma display (from 2.2 to 1.8) which affects the way the image is actually displayed on a mac. Now I used the Matrox MXO with 2 23" ACD's and properly calibrated it so I knew the image was correct (double checked with the scopes). However when I compress for DVD (either with Compressor or Squeeze, etc) I have to apply a Gamma Correction of about .82 to the entire film. Pain in the rump, but at least the image is closer to the way it displays in FCP (with the Matrox). Again this darkening is happening when I go directly to Compressor via FCP or when I import a Self-Contained Quicktime movie. This has been discussed but we really don't have a real answer as to why WYSIWYG isn't really true. So... I apply .82 for DVD.

BUT.... when I compressed down to .h264 there was no apparent darkening to the overall image (there might have been some darkening since some of the clips do seem a little darker than my source) so I didn't do any Gamma Correction at all.

If anyone out there has any answers as to why this is happening or any real solutions please let me know. I really wish I could just get the exact image that I've been working on for DVD and the web. I know it's not just related to the HVX200 since my Sony Z1U's had the same issue when I was compressing wedding video's for DVD.

I did spend a lot of time working and cleaning up the audio doing what ever tricks I could come up with to fix it. We had issues since my house is right next to the highway but I managed to clean it up pretty nicely. Again, I always thought audio was neglected in indie films and since I'm keen on sound (musician who records his own music) I really wanted the sound to be as solid as the image.

Anyway, I want to thank everyone for their comments and to everyone who's working on their own projects I wish you the best.

Todd

ps Yeah, that was Debagro Sanyal playing the brother-in-law who's been in those commercials. He's a real funny guy and has been working a lot (just finished a film with Robert De Niro) and he was the one who brought in every other Indian actor to the film. We can't thank him enough!

He might get mad for spelling his name wrong. It's Debargo Sanyal.
Here is his IMDB if anyone is interested (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1217827/)
GREAT picture BTW. It's very professional and I love the DP work.

Yeah, that's too funny! Guess that's what happens when you're typing faster than you can think...

Yes, it is Debargo Sanyal and he is an awesome dude!

Good job on the audio! Don't worry about the highway, you must have dialed in the floor noise reduction just right cause I didn't notice anything other than some room reverb.

Hope you get it made!

OOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhh this is GOOD !!!

I am definitely wanting to see this picture! Good luck at Sundance but I'm actually pissed I have to wait.

This looks to be seriously excellent work. Kudo's to all.

If I didn't do this film I knew what would happen a year from now, and the year after that... waiting tables and wishing my life was different. By doing this film, I don't know what could happen a year from now.

and especially congratulations on going for the ring. Awesome!

Thanks pixelated,

Yeah, I hope Sundance takes the film but you never know... I'll just keep pushing it until some festival believes in it (hopefully sooner than later; I have to run the big festival circuit first until they either pass or accept it... the premiere requirement really makes me have to choose wisely. I've already had to pass on two festvals since I have to wait on the 'big' responses).

I'm lucky my wife understands all the time and money it's cost me (not that there hasn't been trouble along the way). Filmmaking is a tough business (especially since the money is always going out and never coming in) and it's tough trying to convice the significant other that this could pay off. I just hope that my 'promises' are empty.

This sounded really good what boom mic did you primarily use? Nice shots and moves too bu I agree with the others it looks dark and also kind of washed out. Looks like it needs some color grading and dynamic range enhancements.

We used a Schoeps boom mic (Int. and Ext. versions). I have adjusted some of the darkness (I'm adjusting the gamma but the scopes do show it to be properly lit). It was my intention to have the desaturated 'washed out' look. The HVX is capable of beautiful saturated colors but I didn't want this film to look 'pretty'. We shot over 6 months with wonderful fall colors and winter snow (as well as spring). I may look at the film with my DP and adjust some shots.
