HMC150 questions answered...

Quick Question.
When playing back 60p footage on the camera does it play back realtime or slomo? if realtime, is there a way to set the playback fps?
Shooting bmx and skating the guys would be stoked to watch in slomo, but it would be cool to have either option.
I know its possible on the big optical disc xd cam (yes i know that costs about 400x more)
by setting the playback fps.

Thanks

I can't wait to be able to answer all my own questions...

At "Best (Full)," Vegas 8.0c is giving me 21-24 fps playback of 1080/24p HMC150 footage. At "Good (Full)" there's no discernible quality difference and I'm getting sustained 23.976.

Now, I have an Intel Q9450 quad-core with 4 GB DDR3 RAM, so I don't expect EVERYONE to get this performance, but it looks like Vegas is a solid choice with this footage. (No metadata support, of course.)

Vegas 8.0c (build 260): best/full -- 20-24fps, good/full -- 23-24fps, best/half -- 13-14fps, good/half -- 23-24fps. Machine: quad-core AMD Phenom 2.4GHz, 4GB of RAM, Vista32, sucky Nvidia 8400 video card. As this is a primarily 720p cam, I don't see major issues with usability. 720p60 flies full framerate with no problems. The 8.0c works fine with 1080p24, 720p24 and 720p60, no problems. Those who are still on the 8.0b, upgrade to 8.0c.

Update ----- I just got a call from John Barry & the rep said that the camera will not be available until the 17th of October (man that's over 2 weeks away) - maybe they're waiting for them to hatch or something :(

Hi Evro,

The first shipment came and went very quickly. We are pushing to get more in asap. If I find a Delaer with stock I'll let you know. The timing you got from JB's is about right.

Thanks Rob, today I actually placed & paid for my order with Stefan from Digital Video Technologies, NSW so if you're going to send any stock please make sure they're on your priority list :)

Thanks again!!

shrigg, for some reason, all of the 1080/30p clips don't show up in my log & transfer window, its just a green window.. and then when i transcode those 30p files its real glitchy, along with a green flash frame here and there.

using fcp 6.0.4, osx105.5, mbp 2.16 w/3gb ram.

Just FYI, I am in the middle of moving singlehandedly so no time to shoot this test until sometime next week. Anyone else interested in shooting and posting some 6Mbps footage sooner?

I'll try to get one out this evening.

You are not the only one with this problem. Just use Toast 9 to convert those files. Or heck, use it on all of 'em, it's quicker!

If using Panny's AVCHD transcoder and transcoding my HMC150 files to DVCPRO HD, do the overbright values get thrown away or does it preserve those overbright values (100%-110%) in the transcoding process?

Mangler,
It appears as though Apple has dropped the ball on transcoding AVCHD in FCP. Barry Green has assured me that this issue will be resolved in the next release of FCP Studio. It's a waiting game at this point.

Why would apple make us wait 7 months until NAB2009 when they announce FCS3? I don't understand why they would make us wait like this to edit AVCHD.

Adobe is giving us that in just a few weeks. :(

What Apple has announced is that they will have native support for AVC-HD. That should mean no more transcoding to a different format. As to WHEN they'll release it, and in what version, I have no idea. It could come in a free 6.1 upgrade, or it could be a paid upgrade, or it might wait until FCS3 comes out, or ??? Don't know.

So as it stands right now, the transcoder is your best bet for editing AVCHD (changing it to DVCPRO HD) because it's "edit friendly."

But does the transcoder (the Panny one) reduce quality in any way? Are we clipping the values over 100% and are we introducing any other artifacts/degredation to the image when we transcode to the more friendly format of DVCPRO HD?

Believe it or not, until recently Apple's FCP team didn't really know about this camera. But I have it on good authority that Apple now has some HMC150 footage in their possession. We'll see how long it takes for them to respond, I think we will see something pretty soon.

Seriously? Wow.....

HMC150 aside, how did Apple not know about AVCHD... or are the issues specific to the higher data rate of PH mode?

No, they knew about AVCHD. Just not the HMC150 with its higher bandwidth issues. That is what's causing all the problems with FCP log and transfer, it never was designed for 21Mbps AVCHD. As we all know: Panasonic, bless their heart, went and upped the quality way beyond what had ever been done with AVCHD.
