what the heck is Premiere doing ???

So,,, I guess I should know this but, what the heck is Premiere doing on export that requires such HUGE files???

I normally edit to a couple of sequences, with very few or no chapters at all, I export those sequences with little to no compression at all to allow DVD aps to do the compressing at burn time.

So why does Premiere take 6 gigs or so with very little in the way of color correction, and a few crossfade transitions and render it to the tune of 60 to 70 gigs ????

What's going on under the hood ???

thnx

think of it another way.

a single still image (photo) of any reasonable quality will be at least 2mb .

multiply that by your frame rate (24/25) then by the duration of your sequence (seconds)

Does not take long to get into the GBs.

Dave hit the nail on the head. If you use the adobe media encoder to export a DVD compliant Mpeg-2 file, you'll be close to 3.5gb for an hour of video, depending on your bit rate. If you're not happy with adobe's media encoder, you can use a frame server that will export your timeline directly to an encoding program without having to export a huge uncompressed file.

Just a few ideas.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong but is what I'm doing really helping my finished DVD ??
I mean I'm under the impression that to finish onto a DVD the DVD app is better for doing the final encoding when compared to the NLE,,, am I right ???

OK ,, that 'still image' analogy is great,,, got me going DUHH to self ,,, lol
But you gotta appreciate my confusion when 3 or so gigs morphs into like 65 gigs so I had to ask.
Thnx Dave...

Hey Sachsnack,,, what up, been a while... How's work in the area treating you? last time I spoke to you you were doing corporate stuff right ?? Ever need me I'm in the Cuse area, I benefit from the experience, you'd get an enthusiastic 'GoFor' for a day.
Hey,,, Please tell me what a 'frame server' is not sure I ever heard of one.

It all depends. Some people feel like Encore, or whatever your DVD app is, does a better job. Some people like the media encoder. I've never liked how the media encoder encodes interlaced video, but have felt it does a pretty good job with progressive footage.
A frame server is a small program that let's you export directly from the Premiere timeline. I'm not sure if it would work with Encore, but it works well with dedicated encoding programs. You just export a small file that links to your timeline, then import that file into your encoder, and it reads directly from your timeline.

I'm yet to find a perfect encoding program for every type of footage. I do a lot of experimenting with small clips to find the best results.

I've been using Cineform, the files are pretty big but no where near the size of uncompressed. I have 1.5 tb of storage so I don't care anymore.

We need to put something together for one of the fests. Rally the Central New York troops. Where are you in CNY?
