HMC150 questions answered...

Does the LCD show the full frame or the overscan image? I'm not sure if that even applies to 16:9 footage. Plus it's on a 4:3 3.5 LCD so maybe it just cuts off the sides a bit?

I hate how my hv20 does that. It cuts off so much of the image. I love my dvx100b for the full frame LCD feature.

It's full frame with a border above and below which is useful for displaying camera info without covering up the image

Something to try...

To shrigg & anyone else who gets an HMC-150 soon,

As we all know as gain increases, the image sensor noise also increases. The big problem with any compression system is that the random noise patterns eat up bandwidth and can cause problems with compression.

An interesting test would be to try the different gain settings at the upper end (1080/60i) and lower end (720/24p) of the modes to see how it impacts the compression. One may need to use the built in ND filter in order to shoot the same exact shot with increased gain.

It would be nice to know how far we can push things, before it starts to fall apart...

Interesting idea Bob. I'm willing to try this experiment even though this goes against my instincts to NEVER add gain when shooting :)

Thanks for taking the time to post the test footy shrigg! Once I get back from class I will probably use Toast 9 to convert it to DVCPro or something like that. Does that sound good?

Thanks.

Footage is now up!

http://hdmuse.com/HMC150_Test_Footage_Sept_25_2008.zip is the PRIVATE folder right off the card (inside another folder then .zipped)
http://hdmuse.com/HMC150_Test_Footage_Sept_25_2008.rtf is a log of all 32 clips with framerate and duration

Have fun with it everyone!!

I cannot believe how good these images look.
I have not looked at all of them yet but I love what I see so far.

I'm looking at the MTS files via WinDVD 9 on my Vaio 16.4 inch laptop.
The screen resolution is 1600 x 900 but when I go home I'll view them using a Gateway HD 1920 x 1200 monitor.

I'm coming from a Sony FX1 which I still love but these images are far, far better!!!!

Thank you for posting your video because you did not have to do it.
You rock.

This is a great site!!!!

shrigg, thanks a ton for posting the footage. I am trying to be somewhat reasonable and hold off on buying until I know I can properly work with the footage.

I'm on Sony Vegas Pro - 8.0c and CAN pop the footage right on the timeline. I do not get smooth playback, though.

Are there any Vegas folks here that have tested the footage and have gotten smooth playback. I assume that it's my pc - Intel Core Duo 6700 @ 2.66 w 4 GB RAM
I just hate the thought of buying a Quad core, more memory and who knows what video card, just to end up with a similar, choppy result.

Heck, I don't even have a Blue Ray drive yet. Just trying to piece this all together before I buy the camera without being ready. I want the damn camera but am obviously not ready for it yet.

Any thoughts??

Shrigg, clips look great. Barry was right, no real difference between 720 and 1080 when you compare the same shot.

Re: your list of clips- the AVCHD player on my Panny blu-ray shows different settings than your list. Example: your list shows 0006 as 720/24p but my player lists it as 720/30p.

thanks again for posting these!

The list starts with 0001 but the files start with 0000 so I think they are just 1 off.

Also to me 720 60p seems smoother than the 24p's.
The 24p's seem a little "wavey" in some areas.
I saw this on Barry's clips too.

Barry what do you mean that HD TV on ABC is actually 720p?

I believe that ABC and NBC broadcast in 720p. CBS is 1080i.

[Edit] I did a quick Google search... ABC is 720p, and NBC is 1080i. I work for a CBS station, and we're transmitting in 1080i.

Barry, no permanent damage from freezing and thawing the LCD's? I assume the HVX's viewfinder would have been frozen completely?
No, the viewfinder was okay. It's more in keeping in the body of the camera so the internal heat was probably more applicable, and there was less surface area. Whereas the LCD sticks out all by itself straight into the cold.

The LCD never "froze", by the way, it just got really slow and sluggish and ... well, after a while it was kind of useless without the heating pack.

I'm getting smooth playback on my new laptop with Vegas. My camera just got delivered. I gotta get out of work and get some of my own footage!!!!!

Hmm, Thanks Kurt. Can you list the laptop specs when u have a couple?
Maybe the prob is my video card? I have a NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT / 256 MB

So I transcoded all the footage shrigg posted using the transcoder on Panasonic's website to DVCProHD and output it via Premiere through an Intensity card to a Samsung T24HD monitor. Even after losing 640 lines of resolution (1280x1080 vs 1920x1080), this stuff looks great. The 720p footage... not so much. Not sure if it's a hardware thing, if something got lost in the translation, or if it's just a fault of the DVCProHD codec. It definitely looked better playing native on my computer monitor... but Premiere was acting weird when I imported it.

The 1080 stuff though, all I can say is... "wow". I can't wait to see someone throw a 35mm adapter on this thing :love4:

shrigg- while watching your clips I saw the exposure jump around (like some of the sprinkler footage). I'm assuming that was probably the ND filter, as iris adjustment would be much smoother. am I correct in this?
