5DII DOES 1080P footage!!!!!!

What Laforge says about exposure lock is certainly more encouraging that what Chuck Westfall from Canon says. It seems that an exposure of 1/125 can be locked down.
I think that between now and when the camera is released there will be revisions made to the firmware. Not sure about 24P though.

-you can shoot in Aperture priority - you set the Aperture and the camera chooses between 1/125th of a second or 1/60th of a second - and then it’s main control is the ISO

-you can shoot in shutter priority mode- set the shutter speed ( I think only 1′/60th and 1/125th of a second would be option here) and the camera sets the aperture and ISO for you…
This can't be right because a ton of the shots in his video clearly had a 1/30th shutter.

Does this mean you can choose the ISO or the Camera does in AP mode?

Lens cap trick

Lens cap trick

Take a lens cap. Put in a led with a potentiometer so you can vary its brightness. Change the value until you can get what you want, Lock it..

Look at www.lytecap.com for a similar solution for the HV20/. Someone was talking about doing a microcontroller based version for the D90..

It is doable..
You can also increase/decrease the EV in increments. So, if you start from a black image i.e. a camera with a lens cap and NO light. Then pressing +/- on the EV will change the ISO/exposure/shutter in a certain increments. It is a matter of testing to map these values. Once they are mapped - its even simpler, you can lock exp with a cap on. Then change the EV values until you get you want based on the chart..

There will be workarounds - I use a HV20 + HV30 for my current film. I carry around a custom built mini-ITX and record the 1080p/24p signal using Cineform NeoHD to bypass HDV compression. I use the black cap trick to lock exposure..

Let this camera come out - we'll think of something :-)
Not that simple.. shutter is only one variable to the equation.

What if you want to shoot at small aperture and slow shutter? When you point the camera at a dark region, the auto exp will probably open the aperture and/or increase the ISO and maybe decrease the shutter as well.. how do you know? keep trying until you get it? Who has time to phuck around with it until it arrives at the settings you want? This thing is horribly crippled on purpose, and no pro who requires absolute consistency of image settings will use it.

He said that the camera only does 1/125s and 1/60s, no matter what mode you're in. His video shows otherwise.

Ok Chris, I msiunderstood you there.
True, he obviously shoots 1/30 except for the shot wit the smoke and maybe another.

THANK YOU!!!
It seems to me that some people here and in other places like to talk some bs. And it's really annoying. Who does this guy from Canon,... Chuck? think he is?

Good work f64manray, I hope that clears this discussion once and for all.
Totally works for me. I know that ISO only turns on when the shutter goes below 1/30, and I control my aperture on the lens. So there will be full control like that.

Who should we believe? Laforet who had the camrea for two days in his hand who self admittedly that he had no manual to the camera and no time to figure it out and whose own footage shows shutter speeds that contradicts his statement, or Chuck Westfall who at the time of responding to my questions, was putting together training materials on the new 5D MK2?

Would Laforet or Chuck care to post a HDMI frame grab ? There's quite a few among us who are hoping for 10-bit uncompressed 4:2:2 output via HDMI ???
Perhaps some of you who are movers and shakers would care to ask Canon or some others who have the camera to post one...
Maybe...
:-)

We need a Soap Opera thread!

Uh oh. I guess Canon has to worry!
I heard the RED Scarlet is being advanced. They don't say what they add yet but that we're going to see the specs "fairly soon".

Until now the Scarlet hasn't been an option for me due to it's fixed zoom lens. If they're adding an interchangeable lens system and 35mm chip I'll drop my Canon order immediately!

Why?
Cause it's the same price
Has 24 :P
Slomo
and RAW.

This is an exciting year!

This is to funny. Jannard just announced that Scarlet specs won't be announced until November. This is coincidently the same time that the 5D MKII ships.

So what were looking at here is that Red isn't going to announce specs for Scarlet until Red can rip apart a 5D MKII. Canon is totally driving Red. That's how it seems to me anyway. I still don't think they will even get close to the sensor technology in the 5D MKII.

Jannard says November just to get specs on Scarlet to users. I'm betting it will be December before they even know what their dealing with in regards to the 5D sensor. If they can't match the the low light sensitivity as well as the size of the Canon sensor, I'm not interested in Scarlet no matter how manual the controls are or how great their codec is. It's all about the sensor. Its great to start with RAW for ultimate control of your image, but it's apparent that I will be able to adjust the 5D image in camera to my taste. Scarlet just got way cheaper.

Hm... that's suspicious indeed. If I understood correctly Jannard also said their update has nothing to do with the 5D release. Doesn't look like that now.

Why do you think the sensor will be inferior to the 5Ds?
The RED has better rolling shutter performance than the 5D, doesn't it? 5D wants to do photography in the first place and it's chip is made for that as well. It has the wrong framerate and no slomo. Don't you think a scarlet 35mm sensor would totally blow the 5D away?
Please explain your thoughts "it's all about the sensor". I'm interested.

Looks to me like timing wise we'd have to wait some more for the Scarlet though. 2010 sounds more realistic. :(
