5DII DOES 1080P footage!!!!!!

Canon 5DmII 1080 video highly compressed

Canon 5DmII 1080 video highly compressed

I downloaded unaltered video clips from this link. Check it out yourself: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0809/08091705canon_5dmarkii.asp

This tells the real story:
After it downloaded, I imported into FCP and took a look at the specs of the clips: H264, 30fps (not 29.97), 4.8MB/sec. Not good. Compare that data rate to that of the HMC150 at 1080/29.97 = 17.1MB/sec.

It's nice to dream, but this isn't what people are hoping for.

the issue with the h264 codec is that it's a killer to color correction. you may not see ruined details but altering colors will reveal banding pretty quick. but that won't be such an issue for many people

what i didn't like in those samples was that they're not that sharp. the bird shows a strong sharpening halo around its body. that look is already sharpened in-camera so i'd like to know how it really looks without additional sharpening.

i think you need to downsize to maybe 720p to get better detail

For less sharpening, couldn't you use the Canon equivalent of picture styles (assuming it has that feature)?

if i open the samples with GSpot i get ~40mbps and a frame quality of ~0.6
the d90 samples show a frame quality of 0.9

what's this frame quality? i've searched on google but i don't get it

canon has a sort of pictures stiles but without exposure curves (just the 1d/1ds have curves). there is no mention on the web about curves on 5dmk2 so i guess it hasn't

that's not my point. i'm talking about the samples they posted. i can't evaluate sharpness 'cause i know it has a high sharpen applied. that was the idea.

we'll see late november early december but until then...

Come on guys. Filmlook is not about 24p. It's about a bunch of other things. And if you need it so badly just get the European model with 25p.

Content aside (set quality, acting, good sound etc.), yes 24P is the 'film look'. That's why it's so craved and why camcorders like the DVX100 got so popular. It's only few years ago you couldn't get that look with consumer cams.

I hope the PAL version has 25P, but I wouldn't bet on it. As far as I remember, the P&S cameras sold here also shoot 30P like in the US.

What's real funny about this 30p issue is that Blu-ray doesn't even support 1080p30. You'll have to convert to 1080i60.

The good thing, thanks God, is that if you feel 30P is not film look and H264 compression is not good enough, and there is too much rolling shutter problems, it is too expensive, etc., etc., etc., then you have the choice of NOT buying the camera. I got the D90 and concluded that it is a good way to get used to this new filming trend. At the same time I should be making my investment back thru photography work by next month.
And of course I won't be getting another camera like these Canons and Nikons untill they get much better.

Well, you know, the more I read about it the more I like the Canon. My main concern now is manual control of shutter and ISO. But the D90 doesn't have that either (yet).

If Nikon doesn't come out with a D800/D3x/Danything before 2009 that does video, I'll probably grab the Canon.

Im gonna get a go on one of these on october the 1st .. its being demoed at my local camera shop(uk). I would imagine canon must be doing the same in the US.

it's only 8 seconds from the beginning. downsampled to 720p and converted from 30fps to 24fps in Final Cut.

it's subtle, but definitely think it could work. tough to tell which such limited motion in their samples.

This looks pretty decent, actually. Still, not enough for me to consider. I'm gonna hang out with my D90 and the rest of my gear for now. HPX170 is still around the corner.

So much to do, so little cash. sigh.

dang dudes - don't argue with Kholi ... he'll 1 up you every time, he knows what the F he's talking about ...

no 24p ? not for me !! maybe for you ... but not for me (and pretty much the rest of the world).

done and done ... what's next ?

It's not "frame quality", it is Quality Factor - that is the amount of space (measured in bits) every pixel gets. The D90 compresses to about 0.5-1 bits/pixel (from the 24 bit source...). Seems like the 5D is in the same region. But 5D got a more efficient codec - pictures probably looks less compressed.

Yes, i think so because 5D uses H.264 which is an Interframe codec. It probably got higher quality factor in its Intraframes. The overage quality factor is lower since H264 can predict which parts of the image has changed and only save those parts.

it must be the other way around

mjpeg is keyframe after keyframe. intraframe compression. there are no interframes. it's full frame after full frame.
interframe compression adds a new factor. you get 1 keyframe every Nth frames and the frames in-between contain just the difference.

also some people suggested on other forums that 5dmk2's 30p is forced by the hardware codec taken from some camcorder probably. they think it can't be changed to 24p by a firmware update.

anyway it's not important what that number really is in Gspot.
d90's video quality can be improved in the area of the downsize algorithm. the compression is not the biggest problem.
