A plug for Vimeo - if you have not used it yet, it has to be the way to go

By the way, I have no interest or affiliation with Vimeo, just so you know this isn't some shameless self plug...

Okay... So I have had a youtube directors account for 2 years. Finally tried to get it up and rolling this weekend. Oh, Geeeez, what a nightmare. I encoded my videos a million different ways and uploaded them, still could not get them to work for the life of me. In my search to find answers, I found Vimeo, who has the cleanest, slickest intrface I have seen thus far in my search and probably the best quality I have seen too. I mean, WOW - HD! HD! HD! And the nice part about it is, the first video I uploaded looked great. So I know soe of you use Vimeo, and some of you don't know about it, but when you are going to start posting up your HPX Series footage, I think this is the way to go.

So here's my Vimeo page with a few commercials I have uploaded thus far. Many more to come. Notice the bottom right hand corner has the full screen option...very nice if you are running 1280x800 like I am on my laptop...

I really loved the imbedding of videos too. Although they are not HD, the quality still looks VERY nice for web videos. That's how I have my gallery displayed on my website....

All in all, Awesome. 500MB upload limit each week, but you should be able to get a good amount of videos up. I have uploaded 8x :30 second spots and I still have 300MB left. Check it out. I think it's the way to go.

I cosign this- youtube is like the bane of my existence... I can barely make out any of the content in the videos because all the rez in a vid is dropped down to nothing. Vimeo is well done 720p on the web with fairly well performing compression and the like whih is ultimately waaay more suitable for me.

yay vimeo. quality blows away youtube. too bad nobody surfs it though. youtube definitely more fun if you wanna watch endless videos of skateboarders racking balls or whatever.....

i use vimeo to host my stuff but if i want to get hits, i have to bite the bullet and go youtube. you can always add "&fmt=18" to the url to get your video to play in hq.

I guess everyone has their intended purpose. I do agree that if you're looking for your video to get seen, Youtube is the way to go. Luckily, the only people that I care about seeing my stuff is people that I'm talking to and potential clients to see examples of my work. We will also begin providing a Vimeo link for client approval of videos rather than encoding a crappy wmv and hosting it to our website. This is the way to go right here baby.

The reason I posted this here is to show people that it's free and very easy to create a Vimeo account so maybe it will make it easier for people to share their HPX500 footage. Thought that might be kinda cool, like an official unofficial way for most to share HD quality videos without having to download some 300MB file to see samples. I dunno.

Hey Kit,

I am looking at the HPX-500 and watched your samples on vimeo full size.

What I am seeing looks like SD, but larger. The detail and sharpness is not there.

From your view of the orginal footage to the vimeo upload, is there a loss you can see?

I have only seen one program on my television shot by the HPX-500 which was a fishing show posted here about 9 months ago.

Everything else has been an internet file.

Thanks for your input.

Well, I didn't say it was perfect. Like every other video sharing site, the videos are re-compressed versions of already compressed videos.

Vimeo has a 500MB / week upload limit, which means that if I upload a :30 commercial in full quality, I have to upload a 100+ MB file, which I don't want to do. So I output it as a mpeg4 compressed avi, then upload it so my original file size ranges from 10-35MB depending on content. Vimeo then takes it, re-renders it again so that it is even more compressed and easily able to stream on the web.

No, it's not full quality. But it IS WAY BETTER than all of the other video sharing sites that I have seen.

If you would like to see some full res HD stuff with our SD lenses, I can post a few pictures if you would like.

By the way, what is the screen size that you were looking at the full size video in? Because keep in mind, the HD video on there is 720p (1280x720), so if your screen resolution is much higher (ie. 1600x1200, 1920x1200 etc), it's going to stretch the image and not look so good. It definitely looks decent for web stuff on my Sony Laptop...

Thanks for your reply Kit.

I wasn't really commenting on Vimeo, I was wondering if YOU see much of a difference between the original footage and the Vimeo footage.

I don't have a point of reference.

The 500 with a standard def lens is what I am looking at, so I guess I want to get some reassurance about the detail level after watching.

BTW, I was viewing full-screen with strech turned off.

I complete agree that Vimeo is THE way to go for online hosting. It is simple/clean, and a great way to share your clips. I think it is easier than even posting clips to your own websites/hosting. Which I still do for certain things, but Vimeo will definitely be a staple for my company now that we have fully transitioned to HD.

(They should really be paying us for this! *grin*)

Oh yeah, there's a difference, no doubt. Compressed twice, you gotta notice something. But for web quality, I have not seen a nicer looking image on a video hosting site, and their interface is ultra clean. If you're looking at my commercials wondering if that is what your footage is going to look like from the camera, let me tell you, it looks a million times better than that. Lemme grab a couple stills and post them up. Gimme a few...

Ok. Some pics.

Keep in mind here, I use Hunter Richard's scene file recipe. Detail is set to -2, Detail coring is set to -4.

Images 0, 1 & 2 were shot 720 24pn

Images 3-8 were shot 1080 24pa

All files are jpegs from the raw files exported out of Vegas. Untouched, ungraded, no effects. Raw.

For a $125 lens, I really don't think they look to shabby.

vimeo has been awesome for client drafts and approvals. since you can make the videos private and password protected, none of their stuff is subject to leaking, plus if different people need to see and make notes on a video, they can all do so and leave their comments right on the video page. pretty handy...

I like Vimeo also. Recently I discovered Exposure Room, which is an upstart
that is similar. It is specifically designed for filmmakers and when you upload a
video, it allows you to specify what camera it was shot with, settings, and a lot
of other parameters - so you can search on any of them and narrow down examples. Here is a demo reel I uploaded:

http://exposureroom.com/members/mainstreetprod.aspx/assets/f8196764eda94821acdf2027ad35be77/

The final video can be played back in small, medium or HD. To me, the HD
playback is as good as it gets for compressed web video.

Thanks for mentioning Exposure Room - I took some time to check out their site and videos, and will probably use them aswell as Vimeo in the future.
