The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

I've been following this thread for some time and have been playing with the D90 since last week. Thanks for all the tips and videos you've shared. I've finally uploaded some of my own D90 results.

Simple way to check your shutter on D90

Simple way to check your shutter on D90

Hey guys,

I am actually quite loving my D90. Bearing's post inspired me to do some tests. I'm not too technical of a person, but here's a quick way to see the change in your shutter for those with an optical semi-transparent mouse at hand. Determining exactly what the shutter speed is remains a mystery to me, but maybe these clips can help in determining that.

Just two quick tests. The first video is with AE-lock disabled: http://www.vimeo.com/1727743
The second video has AE-lock on from the beginning: http://www.vimeo.com/1727765

I am stopping the iris down incrementally in both the shots. Now we just need someone technical to infer some objective information about shutter speed from this.

the D90 section is by far the most active on dvxuser (just look at the number of folks viewing), so, i have a painfully n00b question. the kits lens seems to have (to my n00b eyes) a unique lens flare, certainly not something you'd create to denote a "good" lens flare. is that the stock lens? the fact that it's not a prime? i am learning here, so don't flame. just trying to understand. but what i've seen has been nothing like i've seen in a film. i want to use the d90 to do some nice stuff, but want to match the nice lens flares i've seen and would like some pointers as to which lenses would give the best lens flares, and even a sample of different lenses and their flares. again, sorry for the n00biness, but like when digital brought in new people whom the film gurus shunned, i think the dslr-video will bring in folks the digital folks resent.

Pyriphlegethon, it looks like the shutter is constant when exposure is locked. It's hard to say anything about the absolute value if the shutter time though. When using the TV-method absolute values can be seen, at least if they are close to the refresh rate of the TV.

different lenses, different lens flares
if you get an expensive nikkor with nano coating the lens flare is almost absent. the cheapest i think it is the 105mm VR lens. almost all pro lenses have nanocoating.

i don't think you'd find many flare samples on the web. in the photo world people try not to have lens flare. that's why the nano was invented.
you can't have anamorphic lens flare like in many movies (horizontal streaks) with 35mm lenses.

I don' think they are sweating it.

The adapter companies will just focus on their market.

The HVX, EX1&3, Scarlet etc crowd.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if RED was contemplation making an adapter for scarlet.

Check out what they say on their forum.

I shot this little handheld sequence. Seeing how the camera holds up to natural lighting in an office with a lot of windows. I am sure you can guess which film it's inspired by :)

It actually won't unless it has a 24p Option on Delivery.

Otherwise, no thanks. Continue on with the d90, please.

Don't you understand? HVX EX1 etc... is soon to be ancient technology. What is stopping Canon from slapping the full frame sensor from the 5DMK2(or a variation of it) in a camcorder body? Once that happens, then we've got a RED ONE basically minus the RAW crap.. Price at $3000-$5500 and sheeit man you'd still want to use a POS DOF adapter?
