Green tint in picture with EX1

Hi,

I recently bought an EX1 and have been using it for a couple of weeks now.

I'm working on a documentary series that is for the most part shot during night time and in rather low lighting conditions.

I have been very pleased with the quality of the camera and its performance in low light situations.

My only problem is that when using cinema gamma and other cinema settings in the picture profiles, the dark areas (and overall picture as well) seem to have a green tint.

Naturally I can fix that later in the post with color correction but since I don't always color correct my own material, it would be great to be able to adjust the picture profile settings.

Has anyone else had this same problem and how have you solved it? I have tried adjusting the colour matrix and other settings but haven't yet found suitable parameters.

Any advice or ideas?

Are you sure its not your monitor?

Yes. :)

I'm a professional television photographer with good monitoring equipment. All other material filmed with other cameras (ie. my XDCAM PDW-530P) looks great.

I'm sure there is a way to adjust the picture in EX1 to be less green. It would be great to hear if someone has already found a good picture profile setup for low light / night use.

Of course there is a way.
You can do it yourself or try one of the calibrated picture profiles over at dvinfo.

Hmm, There is a green - Magenta tint adjustment in the PP menus but I doubt it would affect the darks more than the brighter areas. You could also try getting into the black balance which is apparently in the maintenance menus somewhere. Search this site for an explanation.

Could try just balancing through a light green gel of course.

Watch out... many : polarizers do not work and will give you a strong green / magenta shift with this camera. I had the same problem with 2 polas that worked fine for my pd150.... and do NOT work with my ex1. I have bought new polas that work fine... also the EX1 exposed Infer RED which it shouldn't that can mess up blacks and over expose reds in sunsets. Search here and other forums for this well know problems. However, since you are shooting at night.. its probably your light souce of neon - green and exterior lights - magenta... that are causing your problem. I would not worry about it - and correct it in post in Color as long as its properly exposed. Otherwise, shoot a color chart under the light and create a fix in your post settings like Hollywood.

Thanks for all the replies.

I tried to search this and a few other forums but didn't find any advice how to set the auto black balance in EX1.

I managed to get to the maintenance menu and found the "AUTO BLACK BALANCE" in the menu, but it is greyed out. My camera version is 1.05.

Is there any way I could set the black balance other than upgrading the camera firmware to 1.11?

I have also noticed the green tint, and think it's somehow connected with the IR problem. Black "warm" materials (like fabrics) appear brownish, while black "Cold" materials (like plastic o r metal) - greenish. Both most noticeable under incandescent light.
