The game is up Sony, time to drop SxS prices

Quick preliminary test of Kensington Reader + Transcend 8gb SDHC Class 6 card

Fits perfectly in EX3 AND I can close the door.

Shot a couple of minutes of 1080i60 and 1080p24 without missing a beat. Will flog it a little harder but just wanted to post initial success

Great news!

This combo was also reported by Alister. Do you have access to an EX1 with software v1.1?

Steve, I think you were right until 1.11. From what I hear Sony had to enable the USB interface in the card slots to allow the use of the U60 HDD which apparently uses the USB connection internally. I was suprised to hear they even had the option internally...

Clearly there is something a little different about these Kensington readers that makes them more compatible. Who knows, maybe they share the same interface chip inside that Sony use for their HDD...

It will be interesting to see how many different types of SD cards work as well.

I hear you GuyB.

I'm really starting to think the synchrotech expresscard/CF read/writer will work with the EX1.
Brian Rhodes (dvinfo) mentioned he was going to order the card today and let us know.
If not, I mentioned I would order it and try it myself.

Also, if it does work, I also believe it will maintain full data rate even with S&Q 60P mode.
Of course using fast CF Extreme IV series.

Here's several links to the card:

Shame about the size, I'm not quite sure I would want something that big hanging out of the camera.

But it will be interesting to hear if it works.

I have an EX1 here as well but for a variety of reasons cannot upgrade it on my own to 1.11. So, no way to test it in EX1.

But I am very pleased with initial results.

OK...
I'm getting close..

The following Expresscard reader/writer works with the EX1, but....

But, I tried a Patriot SDHC 16GB Class 6 card and it was to slow.
I could get it to record in HQ and SP modes, but would error out if recording more than 20-30 seconds.
The card does not seem to be fast enough.

Does anyone know where there is a "shootout" on the fastest SD cards?
I've heard the SanDisk Extreme III SD cards are faster.
Does anyone have any info on this?
I'll be looking for another SD card to try tomorrow.

Also, If I can find an SD card that will be fast enough for at least HQ and SP modes (I doubt S&Q mode, since its data rate is higher), the good news is the SD cards fit in the expresscard adapter and still allow the EX1 memory compartment to close.

I'd try the Transcend 8GB, it's the one that nobody seems to have problems with. What's his name recorded HQ 720/50p without a problem. Awesome news about the door being able to close though, Ill probably pick up the AFT card in the next couple of days.

More testing with the Kensington 7-in-1 and the Transcend 8gb card.

Shot pretty much the entire card mostly at 1080i60. Not a single media error. Put up footage in Final Cut Pro and out to monitor through Decklink Multibridge Pro. Footage looked great. No skips or glitches. Also tried some under/overcranking and that worked fine as well.

Now to find a 16gb card that works...

:huh:Hey nsoltz, when you tested the Transcend 8GB Card, I assume that was in Standard mode of 1080i60; how about the High Quality mode (HQ) mode, say as 24p or 30P? Please clearify that! Carl

Anybody try Kensington 7-in-1 and the transcend 8 or 16GB card on the EX1 yet?

I could not find a decent SDHC card local for my AFT PROExpress-7 card.

I did try an Exteme III 2GB (NON SDHC) and the EX1 would not recognize the card.

I also tried a Dakin expresscard to CF and it also would not recognize the card.

I really want to try an Extreme III 8 or 16 GB 30MB/S card, but nobody had one local.

Professional gear, + Professional user = Professional occupation + professional income = professional prices. At least that's how Sony see it. So don't hold your breath waiting for the right prices. Personally I think the SxS reader is more of a rip off than the SxS cards themselves. While I'm on this, does anyone know a cheap alternative to the official SxS reader( Don't say EX1 and besides, it's not cheap). What is this Kensington 7-in-1 ?

Nope... tested in 1080i60 HQ. I should have clarified that point. All of my tests were conducted in HQ mode.

I'm getting close using the AFT PROExpress-7 card, but I could not find any half way decent SDHC cards to try.

I did try an Exteme II 4GB SDHC Class 4 card that claim 15MB/s. It's a class 4 card, so it's minimum rate "could" go as low as 4MB/s.

At first it worked flawless. I was able to record 12 minutes of 1080 24P HQ and 1080 30P.
I tried 1080 60i and it went for about 40 seconds then errored.
I reformatted the card and played more.. Now it started to error even on the modes that did not previously error. S&Q mode errored within seconds. Also SP modes eventually errored.

I can say it is better than the 16GB Patriot Class 6 card I tried earlier. This card errored on all modes within 15 seconds.

Wish I could of tried an Extreme III SDHC card. They claim 20MB/s.
The new Extreme III SDHC card claims 30MB/s. This just may work. Like I said, for about 25 minutes of testing I had 1080 24P and 30P working great with the older Extreme II card.

So the latest Extreme III 30MB/s card is claimed to be twice as fast. This just "might" do the trick. I guess it's still possible that the AFT PROExpress-7 card may be a "bottle neck".

I will also order the Kensington 7-in-1 just in case.
