The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

retimed sample 2, 50% speed
resolution is maintained with 4000kbps divx. look at the microwave oven grid, clearly seen when in focus

i'd do more tests but many upload mov files to vimeo retimed to 23.976. i want to retime the original footage, not something even that small altered

Just doesn't seem practical if it's required every time one wants to shoot...Especially if it must be reset every time you leave LV!

How hard would a firmware release be to include manual control of shutter and sensitivity? I guess it's just getting the message to the right person up there.

it's not practical but i was thinking for tests to do that

not sure about shutter speed but to me a firmware upgrade to have manually selectable iso is as simple as can be
what remains to be seen after more tests are done and more people get a d90 (not available yet in many areas) is if nikon will do it or leave it for a higher price camera like the next d300

what i can tell you for sure is that when all the "secrets" will be 100% checked and all limitations 100% verified i will post all possible requests on nikon's photo forums (where it's certain nikon "himself" reads) or send them to people who could forward them to technical support

It's easy to make a manual camera. It's hard to come up with algorithms involved in an automatic exposure mode. Engineers likes challenges and the overage consumer likes auto - thats why =). It may also be marketing reasons; professionals have money and professionals wants manual.

It would be a simple change for the firmware programmer to make the video mode manual. He would probably have to remove code!

Ando: I don't know, I guess you will have to try. Seems like a good idea.

I've been thinking about making a portable solution of the dimable light source. It will attach like a lens cap.

hmmm you say with leds. it would be portable !

to dim a led array you have to pulse them with PWM, like you already said, from a microcontroller like AVR or PIC. the duty cycle of pwm would set the light intensity. a bit harder to do at home unless you buy a led dimmer but if anyone writes the software for the mcu you could get very very high precision for light's intensity and you could measure camera fps (with on/off pulsing) and sync audio with it too.

I know ando. I have have experience with electronics and microcontroller development. This should be fairly easy to implement. With 'dim' I meant control the intensity with PWM:ing. The PWM signal has to be low pass filtered though, otherwise groups of pixels will be white and others black.

you know how to do this?
cool. would make for a nice project, useful for other cameras too

if you do put the fps blinking to check frame rate and a blink with a beep option to sync audio

Search for HV20 lyte-cap. Its been done since the hv20 has a similar problem..
Oh, I see, didn't know that.

That one doesn't give the possibility to measure shutter speed though. And since mine would be controlled with a CPU, different intensities could be saved in memory. It would also be possible to have different profiles that fits different lenses or different apertures on every lens.

Good idea ando, a piezo buzzer or similar can be added as well. Then it will also serve as a tool to sync audio.

in any case remember this
for d90 they use a grid of 420 color metering sensors (1005 for more expensive ones).

the sensors' data, color and intensity is evaluated and compared to the internal database of >30k samples (nikon may not say exactly but since 30k was many years ago cameras today must be having lots more)

so it's important to use white light, diffused. if you don't do that the matrix may see individual led spots and colors and produce wrong results. nikon's matrix can evaluate images with very high contrast, like when having sun in the picture and the 420 sensors sample the frame pretty well.

you have more on this here

http://www.nikon.com/about/technology/life/scene/index.htm
http://imaging.nikon.com/products/imaging/technology/scene/14/index.htm

that's the exact reason i was thinking about halogen lights
very natural white light that won't mess with metering. but they're not portable so your led idea is better

I haven't followed the tread for that last 24 hours, so hopefully this hasn't already been discussed. I have been trying to figure out what the default shutter speed is, and I believe it is 1/30.

Wouldn't 1/24th make more sense? Or even 1/48th? That just seems odd.

Kev: It would make more sense, I assume it has a 1/30 or 1/60 shutter as least in NTSC countries to avoid flicker

SCSZ: use a manual lens

im trying to keep up with this thread... can u explain wat does this retiming doing? Also are you basically slowing down the footage?

slowing down by creating interframes using vectors

software like twixtor or furnace kronos
i did post at half res but there the image isn't affected by this. vectors produce pretty sharp frames

i just wanted to show that by doing retiming you can get very smooth action and that d90's video may produce good retiming although the software isn't cheap.

other retiming types are available for much less but they will do some blur. may be what you want, or not.

the 24fps isn't very smooth for faster motion but can be improved this way

is did u actually it slow down the footage by 50% or jst added those extras frames? Isnt 50% a little to choppy? Also the test you did kinda looks like 29.97 or somthing... look like video.
