The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

no way will Canon canabilize or devalue their pro video camera series.

Nikon stands to make far greater money with the soccer moms and dentists with too much cash expecting spectacular videos from the d90, than us geeks.
full manual mode from nikon will happen a year from now on a much more expensive camera: positioned inbetween the d90 & d800 price point. that way, nikon can empty the wallets of potential film makers.

the only thing that would excite us more is a manual mode on an fx camera body
approaching 1080 resolution (*drool*).. and the more expensive nikon's (d300 and up) have greater processing power to do reach that goal.

d90 is just to get people excited. ;) 14 more days before mine arrives..

I don't think that's true at all, man. Canon can get pretty cutthroat with their cameras, to be honest.

There's still more that's on there in a DSLR that shoots Video. I.E It's not a DEDICATED video acquisition system. Don't put it past them, you'll probably just end up being wrong.

yep, canon is selling camcorders too and they will think twice about how good dslr video will be. even more considering their camcorders are good for that price range (would you put hv30 quality as a gift on a $1400 camera instead of selling it separately???).
they have just released the 50D with very little improvements over 40D and no video mode. that model is supposed by the price to be over d90's level. even if the soon to be released 5D replacement gets video that price tag won't affect nikon's share. the cheaper model 450D released 1-2 months ago doesn't show any sign on future video features.

so basically canon turned all their cards for 2008 for any price under $2500-3000. no video for $1000 for at least a year from now. that leaves others with time to do more.

for sony exactly the same.

it would, in theory, be nikon's moment now to get a big part of the new dslr video market share. they're free to do anything with video, they don't have any dedicated camcorders.
i also expect the future d300/d700 to make the step in this direction. until then there are lots of things to play with on d90

competitive video may come sooner from the other players, the new partners panasonic and olympus. too bad they use small sensors, but a step forward anyway.

Is this the only major thread discussing the D-movie feature and its flaws? Seem like all the other photo forums are jst takling about the photo side of things instead.

mostly here
see d90 managed to be a good dslr so you'll have to wait more until this video thing gets more attention and hopefully nikon will listen to potential firmware fixes people here or on other forums may request

still nice as hell, and the "rolling blind" effect is barely visible...you have to look for it, but it could've been cause it was 480p
i could only see it when you had it next to the mail bin.

I saw it as well. If it weren't so late I would stay outside and try to figure out how to fix it while retaining the best image clarity. Only way I could see was to point the camera at the light til the effect vanished then AE-L.

But, High ISO image!

it's probably late, but that last part "but high iso image" is that bad? not sure if you're stating it's bad that it's high or it's a positive thing that it's high...who knows...i'm going to sleep

It's not bad. Just extra noisey/grainy. Unfortunately. My preference is cleanliness as far as the image is going right now. But, for no light/street light that's a start.

To be honest, I haven't even dropped anything into an NLE yet. My sole concern is optimizing the image at this point. I would have gotten some real, lit, steady footage today but the other was sick so I had to wait it out.

Hopefully tomorrow. But I'm still learning some great stuff about the system.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I think it's great you're trying to get as much as you can from it in-camera. I was just curious as to whether or not you had tried some post work on it. :)

OPEN REQUEST: Steady footage shot on tripod, dolly, steadycam or slow handheld rig - mimicking what you would see/use in a short/feature.

Here is a test chart I shot. Sorry it's a bit under exposed.

It's interesting that the vertical resolution seem higher.

Thank you Joe! Looks like vertical resolution is about 500 lines per picture height and horizontal is 450 lines per picture height. I too wonder why horizontal is low. Which lens and what aperture did you use?

I have to say the quality is disappointing. There are aliasing, debayering problems, low true resolution, high amount of compression artifacts. Someone stated that he thought the sensor is read using skipping mode and that is probably true. Binning would increase quality and lower aliasing.

Image to the right is something to compare with. I took a picture with my D40 in a 2x2 downsampled mode and resized it to the same size.

comparing to a photo camera do you think is a smart thing to do?
get your $999 video camcorder do some tests. make sure you use a 35mm adaptor and the same lens at the same f-stop (you understand why i hope).

anyway what settings did he use when shooting the chart? iso, lens, f-stop, focal length????
he didn't do this at f/1.8 in the dark at iso 1250 with his father's 1975 film nikkor lens right?

"experts"....

The rumored Digic processor already makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, along with the ability to use me some Zeiss ZF lenses. I'm not a fan of Canon DSLR systems but I am a fan of the the XH-A1's image clarity. If they can step it up on the 5D release I'll be more than happy to dump the D90 and jump on the 5D bandwagon; I'm [mostly] brand agnostic to begin with.
.

so let me guess. it doesn't matter to you if you spend $999 on d90 or $2999 for the 5d replacement? great logic. why bother if you have 2 Reds already?

The chart does not look right.. Even the HV20/HV30 with its plastic lens have more lens.. 600+ lines is pretty standard among the Canon, Sony, Panasonic low-end HD camcorders..

Is it the compression ? I find it hard to believe that a DSLR sensor + real glass is worse resolution than a 1/3" sensor + plastic lens..
