The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

The problem is that all the points that Pappas mentions are in doubt.. The compression throws out a lot of the advantages..1080i over HDMI is crap according to Kholi..The Dynamic Range and the selective focus are the big advantage, and the low light with the kholi trick..
But there are options..Thats all I'm saying.

About Dynamic Range..This is about the sensor in the Casio EX-F1

>>
The camera is based on the Sony IMX017CQE 1/1.8” CMOS sensor announced back in February 2007. This sensor is kind of a “light” version of the Sony 12.5MP APS-C IMX021 sensor used in cameras like the Sony Alpha A700 and Nikon D300.

I doubt that there is much difference in dynamic range.. 6 MP in 1/2" sensor (EX-F1) or 12MP (D90) in 1.2" sensor gives slightly better low light - but not as much as we may imagine...

Actually the total sensor size are 3x times - the D90 sensor puts 12MP in 28.4mm diagonal..The Ex-F1 puts 6MP in 9.1mm..
Pixel size on the D90 should be 50% more..

Yes..Its so frustrating after I moved to Sydney. Everything comes into shops really late and its hard to get a camera to evaluate..
What would be cool is for someone to evaluate the EX-F1, Panasonic LX3 and the D90 video quality...I think the LX3 may be a trump card..CCD + full manual controls + a decent lens + 2x codec quality vs the D90

Panny LX-3

Panny LX-3

The component out on the LX3 can also be captured via the AJA or Blackmagic cards at 10-bit..
Imagine lossless 720P/24P at 10-bit..

what I`m trying to say, and the reason for most of us still typing...is not the 12mbs or the JPEG edges,it`s a technical factor known in detail by 2000 users...proof is in the pudding...and that picture is nice.

...is what it has to offer and seems to me D90 can do some tricks.

How many people do you think will see your short and tell you" Dude, nice story and image, but why didn't you shoot on 25 mbs?"

The jury is still out on what the D90 can do vs what it actually does. The 2000 posts here do not agree that the D90 is usable.
It is a tool, it has good dynamic range, good lowlight (but only using a trick) and selective focus.

Its gotchas - little video documentation, requirements of a manual lens for iris/gain control in video mode, crappy compression, possible issues with video debayering

I was thinking about the LX3 before D90 was announced. I needed something that I could carry everyday.

Samples of LX3:

I might still get one for my wife when it does come out. But I am getting the D90 for myself. Why? The picture is prettier. Yes, I am lame like that.

And I still need a rocking DSLR which this is. I think this is also an investment into future video cameras from Nikon. Each lens I buy will make future purchases that much easier to swallow.

I think with proper care, the D90 can do some incredible stuff, stuff my HD camera won't be able to do. That is exciting. I am willing to take a gamble.

With LX3, I get a solid camera but if I were to really shoot something seriously I would simply pull out a professional video camera.

I think at this point, it is clear the D90 despite what it can or cannot do, requires a great deal of cheating/troubleshooting to get optimal performance.

Not a very good sign. But lets see what we can push out of this thing. (Again we= kholi, zak and drew) haha

Ok guys, I'm back. And the channel's been freshly updated.

Thanks for keeping the vimeo D90 page up, Mad. I like what ya did to the footage, as well. Proof that it can work out with a little care and ocnsideration.
No problem at all - and thank you for shooting stuff to add to it. :D

I didn't touch the footage though, I believe that was Norbert. :)
