The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

Has anyone hacked the firmware yet?

Or better yet- tried out timelapse with the built-in intervelometer?

Does it even have that? We thought it did but DPReview may have made a bad copy and paste from the D300 specs. Can anyone verify the presence of this in their menus?

Proof of concept

Proof of concept

I just tried the method I described in my previous post with a cheap 1280x720 30P CMOS video camera (not the D90). It works perfectly. Se results below. First frame grab shows something that looks like a 1/30 shutter. Rest of pictures shows different shorter shutter times. You can also see consequences of the rolling shutter effect - start and end of lines have a slope which they don't have with a mechanical shutter still camera. The slope doesn't change as shutter time changes which is a testimony of rolling shutter theories described in earlier posts.

Anyone with a CRT-TV and DVD player (just burn the video on CD and play it) or computer with TV out, can use the method to see about how long time the shutter is letting in light. It will only take minutes to get the first result once the download is complete.

Kholi, Joe, Zak, or someone with the camera on hand: if you have the equipment and interest, try this and show us the results. Record a bunch of short clips, like the full range of exposure adjustments, both from a dark starting point and a highly lit starting point - as Norbert suggests. Then, from a computer, look through the clips and find a frame that contains both the starting slope and ending slope of the line (sometimes start or end is outside the visible area). Save the frames as images and show us. That way we may see at which exposure steps shutter changes and at which steps ISO changes. Predictable patterns may be found.

The wobbly rolling shutter I've seen in Kholi's first footage videos has just turned this off for me. Hopefully they can fix this in the future

I wouldn't base my final word on that footage. There's PLENTY stable stuff around that shows what happens when you take the time to stabilize it. Even using the included VR lens the wobble isn't anywhere near as terrible.

Promise.

Yeah, I wouldn't be too quick to judge it on that... Kholi was shaky (due to excitement? hehe) and the VR feature was turned off.

I'm uploading some footage to Vimeo right now. All of my footage is incredibly noisy, even in full daylight. I don't really know how to remedy this.

Footage coming shortly. It's only 2 seconds.

It said 45 minutes when I first uploaded it (45 minutes ago) and now it has 50 minutes remaining.
