The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

laugh, nah, i don't know if you've ever tried it, but when i was younger i would look at a fan and try to focus on one blade at at time and follow it....but the hardest part would've been the math....but that's where I would've just gave up and tried a comparison from another camera.

Hey folks,

thanks for the kind comments.

I've shot a multitude of times on the D40x in that same venue, so i've gotten used to what I'm supposed to be using as far as shutter and f/stop goes.

For the lowlight shoot, that was a 30mm f/1.4 from sigma, not a VR. Hence, I emphasize that if your used to camera steadyhand it's possible to get a decent steadiness :D.

The exposure was pumped up to +5, and the f/stop was at 1.4.

If I remember correctly, I wasn't in live view when I took the photo before when I referenced the EXIF data.

Also, posted one more video: http://vimeo.com/1684488

Shows a lot of reaaaaaallly low light, and what happens when it gets a little too dark ;) in two scenes. also what it looks like w/. 1.4

Niiiiiice!

Too bad that hdmi is no good either. Anyway, I think you can shoot some pretty decent footage with this thing. No cinema releases, but I guess quality and rolling shutter will be less of an issue in the next generation cmos. Good bye RED.

I don't know if I've missed this or if it was never discussed, so here's a question for anyone with a D90: Are the Easy exposure steps consistent or do they completely depend on where you lock exposure?

Suggestion on how to test this:
1.
- Point the camera to the shadows, let the camera do it's thing and lock exposure
- Point the camera on something well lit (that would yield different exposure values)
- Use Easy exposure to get good exposure on the well lit area
2.
- Keep pointing the camera at the well lit area, unlock exposure and let the camera do it's thing
- Lock exposure and set Easy exposure to the same value as you did before

Now, did the exposure look the same in both situations or did it change even if you were at the same Easy exposure value? If it looked the same, the Easy exposure steps should be consistent, and that would be really really nice.

Nice. The footage looks great. Difference I see is that this footage shows the kinda noise Zak, Drew and myself were getting in lowlight. The concert footage is as clean as the footage I got with the "trick".

What did you do differently? I noticed in the concert video you had the 30 aimed at the light and AE-L was on for a split second.

ALso, are you actually seeing any ISO change at all? We haven't, but if you have I'd like to know what you're doing!

My footage looks much worse than everybody else's compression-wise. I need to post up some footage to demonstrate. It just looks awful.

Sorry, no ISO change, just double checked.

Can you clue me in on this trick? just joined in on this topic ;).

Theres really no secret to what I was doing, It had a lot to getting used to the D90 interface over time. The concert video was the last video i took, while those other videos we're some of my first, before it started.

Said it way earlier this morning in another post but I'm pretty sure the "D-Movie" mode favors Manual lenses/Manual Irises much more than auto.

Jud -- No, not saying that there was a secret. Just trying to see if it was intentionally done or if it was on accident. You kept mentioning the ISO and I thought that, here again, I missed something and ISO changes actually worked. Now that you're confirming it doesnt I'm pretty positive you stumbled unto what I did. And, the second round'a footage you just posted (looks great!) had the same amount of lowlight chromaish noise that my footage indoors had until I figured out how to degain this sucker.

You said you used +5 exposure, however, if you aren't aiming the camera at a solid dark source when you AE-L (LOCK) it then it overrides that setting anyway. That's what it looks like happens to me. At +5 the image noise is very abundant, -2.0 ~ -5.0 looks decent.

Provided that Vimeo works properly there's one clip comin' up that shows +5.0 exposure at work and a CLEAN image. No juttery shutter speeds.

Lens is a Super Takumar SMC 50/1.4 M42 screw mount mated to the Nikon body via adapter.

Suppose that changes it up for me. If I can get a clean image between +5 ~ -5 by using manual lenses that means I can control (through indirect means) the exposure to begin with. Maybe not meter it properly, but eh.

Other D90 users confirm: Zak mentioned this last night, I never noticed it. But, when switching back to Viewfinder mode then into LV mode again does it change your gain setting?

It does on mines. Which means each time you leave LV and come back to it you have to find your "clean" setting again. Grrr.
