The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

Not that it matters, but I did this: http://www.vimeo.com/1683941
I edited together some of the footage that Kholi and Zak shot, just for fun. Nothing new except gamma changes, saturation changes, music and titles. Maybe this camera will be good for artsy fartsy opening credits. :D

Awsome! If there were a pair of panties and stains on the bed, the whole thing would have made sense.

Kholi did that some pages ago. He didn't like the HDMI outout very much.

you can take a look at d300's hdmi video captures.
there's a big chance they are the same with d90.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond300/page9.asp

however d90 probably has a 2 at most 4 channel 12 bit cmos read-out, considering its fps speed

d3 has a 12 channel 14 bit read-out and a very different cpu speed. expect anything realted to this to be better on future d300/d3/d700 models if they get video too.

looking at this compiled samples i think d90's video would greatly benefit of some retiming and/or added motion blur. will improve fast moving actions.

I've come to the final conclusion that unless you put this camera on a tripod, do some decent lighting, decent framing, etc. you will never ever get any positive results.

That is so true. And it goes without saying that when it comes to wanting anything more than a "home movie", those are requirements.

But impromptu demonstrations are all that we are going to get at the moment.

But proper lighting, framing, and filming technique are better indicators of one's skill and experience, and not the camera itself.

With proper lighting, framing, and filming technique even the cheapest webcam will yeild impressive results.

Lol, yeah. A good film is not just about the camera, it's about panties and stains too. :)
Joking aside, the look and feel of the image in those clips was already quite filmic to my eye. Some color timing and music helped set the mood. The D90 may be difficult to work with at the time but I belive it can be used to tell a good story. I will be surpriced if no one shoots a short with it.

Hey Folks.

I was behind the Low Light D90 video on the vimeo group (http://vimeo.com/1681694).

Unfortunately, I'm not totally positive of the details of the filming. The photo taken right before it had the iso of 1250, 1/125 , and 1.4. The only thing that might have changed is the shutter, but I'm pretty sure I didn't change anything.

I've got another video coming soon with more lower light shots, well lit and background noise shots too, i'll post it when it's up.

EDIT: Also, curious to know if anyone else is experiencing a lot of stubborness when exporting the movies out from imovie/fce. Tried both, and usually they will come out with audio issues, or with imovie, a lot of dropped frames and lagging.

.

Which really opens up the discussion of the industry that this camera will improve drastically. Cheap porn is going to start looking a whole lot better if we can just learn to ignore those rolling shutter artifacts. ;-)

Hey guys,
These tests are great! My only problem with this camera is that any bump while filming makes it looks like you're shooting through a puddle of water. Great B-camera for low budget shoots, but let's start bugging nikon - I'm sure that a firmware upgrade could increase the speed of the shutter's readout... and you know there are going to be d90 hacks coming out. Who wants to buy d90hacks.com?

the webcam part ruined your idea
Heh. Perhaps a little exaggeration there. ;) But hopefully everyone understands what I mean.

Consumers look at the amazing pictures, or videos taken (generally by professionals) for their ad-spots and rush out to purchase the product and wonder why their own results are far from equal.

A $5000 video camera is not going to make anyone a professional, and will not yeild professional results. Put it in the hands of your average cosumer and you'll end up with footage that looks identical to any other person's home videos. Shaky, poorly lit, horrible audio, hear their own breathing, framing is all the same, and far from nice, and occasionally upside-down.

It seems like all you have to know is when the rolling shutter will be most noticeable. I was ready to cancel my order until I saw the walk through the apartment footage (not the CU of the head, but the walk through).

If you have a steady hand, tripod or steady cam of sorts you'll be fine. Rolling stutter is terrible if you haven't had any experience w/ steady hand before, it's a particularly heavy camera in comparison to a consumer camcorder.

The walkthrough looked pretty good indeed. We need firmware updates for full manual control and less compression. Then shoot stabilized video and we should get pretty decent footage.

that part has very very low rolling. just like the fisheye video

anyone cares to do a test at 640?
does it save faster? it should, it seems it's using less of the sensor (no overheating).
