The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

My attempt at Zak's footage:

(upconverted to 1080p, adjusted channels, curves, jpeg artifact removal, regrain- to hide compression)

what is it you are talking about? what are you referencing? is this in the post addressed to lee?

i think thats what it is but on my computer your post adressing lee just looks like this:

Lee:

that it, nothing else in that post. my computer is connected to the internet via a satellite connection that has all sorts of funky issues and messes things up so if there is something im missing can someone please try another way to post whats there so i can view it since i just tried everything i can and im somewhat limited by how my internet connection works:crybaby:

I used dell picture studio (kinda like a less featured photoshop), Everything I did but the Jpeg artifact removal, you can do in FCP. Jpeg artifact removal is a little plug-in for the program- basically it smooths the image and resharpens it. Adding the grain and then resizing to 1080p is what makes it look better. Grain can easily hide compression, it just looks grainy- and sucks to re compress into a codec.

If I was using final cut I would have:

1.Opened up a 1080p uncompressed 10-bit timeline
2.Apply s-curve (and push the mids)
3.Mess with the channels (I put gold into the mids and cyan into the black)
4.De-grain (or de-noise)
5.Re-grain with your filmgrain simulation of choice.
6.Export

I think this is a camera for the web. I think theatrical release or a festival short is unrealistic.

I am 100% sure that you could get away with a theatrical release with the D90 with some extensive post-production. As long as your DP knew how the shutter behaved and what the limits of the camera are. It would be soft- mind you - but with a good story it would make for a nice film.

i kinda think though that the video in liveview or hdmi wouldnt be setup for absolute best quality output because i doubt they were thinking of this camera being used like this, i bet it was just set up for it to be useable from a very basic point of view so i think that any internal processing are geared towards what is quick and as least demanding rather than optimal quality.

No doubt. I'd go even further and say that the HDMI output wasn't even intended for use while you were shooting video. Nikon included it so you could look at your still photos on your awesome plasma screen, just like the HDMI out on the D300 which is a camera that doesn't shoot video at all.

Yeah. Just saying, you guys wanted to know what it looked like. LOL. Trust me: you don't want to see it displaying live video. MAYBE recorded video, but the compression is very blatant.

Stills, again, look nice and crisp.

this is what i have been thinking necessary since the announcement that the video is in mjpeg.

while mjpeg obviously isnt anyones first choice of a codec there are a lot of things working for us to at least make an improvement. since mjpeg and just the jpeg specification in general have been around for so long there have been a ton of different types of ways that people have used to get around some of the pitfalls of of the codec itself, especially when compressed at non optimal settings or just the limitations of the codec itself. obviously there is no absolute cure but there are different avenues to make a substantial and noticeable improvement to the files created with this compression. that being said it sounds like you definately go a noticeable difference from that plugin so thats good but i think there is still more left to do. ive spent a lot of time the past few days looking into this and it wont be that hard to create one that is more optimized for the workflow specifically with the d90 to increase the quality of artifact removal and cleaning up the mjpeg files in general so this has definately been one of the things that make me think that we still have room to increase the overall quality by implementing the correct tools for this workflow. when i thought about and started to research this specefic task, im confident that this pitfall can be greatly decreased, impossible to eliminate completely but enough for me to know that a feature can be done well with the d90 when done right. im already working on it....

i just did about a 9sec clip, sorry so short, of jpeg de-artifact in PScs3. I made an action to of 1sec at a time...yeah yeah, not a lot for now, but I think it may have cleaned it up. I could've saved the .psd or whatever, but I didn't think to, although my action is saved. I'm uploading in on vimeo now.

is this what im supposed to be seeing cause if so then im confused. definatley havent seen that frame in zaks footage. im really confused on how that turned up.

starband sucks, im really really lost right now

Don't panic ! :)

Yes, that is the right image, it was a joke about me staying up for hours and hours waiting for the latest D90 news.

Verdict: Stay away from HDMI out at all costs … cause this stuff looks HORRID HD out, as far as video goes.

OK, I'm confused. Zak, I thought you saved your clip of walking-around-the-apartment to a card. It looked good to me.

Why not just save clips to cards & avoid HDMI? Or does Kholi's caution mean the same thing?

Because I requested the HDMI output :)

If the camera were set up the way the HV20 is set up, the HDMI output might be exporting UNcompressed 1080p video. If that were the case, we'd be in business as far as avoiding all the pitfalls of HIGHLY compressed mjpeg footage.

As it stands, the camera is not set up this way and therefore, what we get out of the HDMI is crap :)

you still will be able to get better results through code targeted directly towards jpeg and even more so when optimized specifically for a d90 workflow

No you won't, as stated in my post: this is the final and absolute peak of compression artifact removal, there is no further improvements to be made.
