The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

This feels almost rude, certainly in the light of all the work some have put into testing this nascent hybrid . .

But . . .

The D90 is not very good at video. :(

There, I have said it ! The D90 produces below par video with low definition, very obvious compression artifacting and very obvious rolling shutter wobble - even on relatively stable footage (ie: not whip pans) - the rolling shutter wobble was something I was prepared to live with but it seems to show up even on shots whose only allusion to whip pans are hand held shake - I am sure there is mobile phone video functionality out there that handles the rolling shutter better than this (am I being unfair ?)

I am sure with enough effort and trickery you could get a decent SD picture out of this thing but this can be done right now and at better quality and with no trickery and - I suspect for most people posting here - with equipment that already have - I for one will now be waiting for the next installment in the video on DSLR game.

Finaly . . .

Finally I can go to sleep . . .

as for the better manual control in movie mode, this should be possible by a firmware upgrade/change. i cant think of any reason that this could not be changed in the firmware.

I wonder what nikons leadway time is for a firmware update. Maybe couple of months? or xmas? Does anyone know how long after the D80 was released... an update was available?

i tried the SD mode. looked terrible. worse than 720p definitely.

i've got two uploads coming. i put an f/1.4 50mm lens on with an 8x ND. definitely raises the grain level as you would expect without the proper controls. but i call it grain because it somehow looks more organic than the noise i was getting indoors.

Ok, back to the easy exposure adjustment then...so normally it runs, what, 1/125th? So if you wanted something faster, you could just put a 1, 2 or whatever stop ND filter on it, and fake the gain into increasing, then set the easy comp at -1, -2, or whatever to get your desired faster shutter speed and the gain would then be correct. And you could lock it and shoot. But to get slower than 1/125th, I'm not sure what you could do. Of course, ISO200 is hardly low enough sensitivity to run slow shutter speeds in daylight anyway.

NDs is what's gonna have to happen. I can't figure out exactly what shutter speeds they're equivalent too. I can categorize it somewhere around: 1/30ish, 1/50ish, 1/200ish, 1/1000ish

That in terms of DSLR shutter speeds, which doesn't list a 1/48 or whatever.

Like I said, there are ways around it. Compromises and you'll have to figure out if it's worth it versus an HF11 + 35mm adapter.

I honestly can't begin to disagree with this statement. Sad as it may be I really wanted MORE out of it, but I suppose the good thing is that Canon is probably right around the corner and they have a lot more experience with video.

The rumored Digic processor already makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside, along with the ability to use me some Zeiss ZF lenses. I'm not a fan of Canon DSLR systems but I am a fan of the the XH-A1's image clarity. If they can step it up on the 5D release I'll be more than happy to dump the D90 and jump on the 5D bandwagon; I'm [mostly] brand agnostic to begin with.

All THAT said: How much you wanna bet someone makes a killer short on the D90?

Once you know the limitations, understand them, then exploit the hell out of the loopholes it really doesn't matter. A decent 480p, DOF, excellent Latitude, excellent bokeh, and great lighting... all the mumbo jumbo just won't matter that much.

Word up.

hdmi test? hdmi test? hdmi test?

I was just about to post the same thing. I didn't want to push for it last night because I just wanted to see how the basic controls work, but now that we have a pretty good handle on the quality of the compressed MJPEG stuff, I think I'd like to hear something about the HDMI out.

The DP review pages made the HDMI output sound like it looked great. Of course, this may have just been when looking back at high resolution stills, but I'm very interested in knowing how good the video footage looks on an LCD or plasma or on a computer when taken straight out through the HDMI port. Not playback, but live as the camera sees it. Is it possible? Does it work that way? Or is this limited as well?

Does the output come before the MJPEG compression? How cluttered is the image with info overlays and what is the possibility of using this camera in conjunction with a computer that has HDMI input for capturing with a Blackmagic card?

Anybody with a D90 also have one of those pesky mini-hdmi cables lying around?

Does Best Buy sell Mini HDMI cables? I could make a run if they do. I don't see how it coudl be any better, though.

Well, the only way it would be better would be if it worked the way the HV20 HDMI output works, which is to send a signal prior to HDV compression. I don't know if that's the case, but it seems possible. I'd tell you to look it up in the DMovie section of the manual.. but I'd just be joking :)

I think it's a crapshoot on whether or not BestBuy carries them and it seems like something they wouldn't stock. And if they do, they're probably Monster Cable brand and cost $100.

But even without the cable you could tell us one thing. How much of the image in the live view LCD has info or overlays on top of it? The images of the screen on DPreview are all from an older verison and not of the D90 at all, I don't think. Are there numbers and things over the picture? How about focus points or squares or whatever? Or is the image itself uncluttered?
