The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

Kholi, thanks for the driving clip. Even when you've pulled out wide in that shot, the wobble from the vibration is rather severe.

Hate to say it, but it's like a HDR/35mm-ish DOF cell phone video mode. The video mode appears to be an afterthought. I doubt the severity of the rolling shutter can be fixed all that much with a firmware update.

Seriously, I really appreciate the clips that have been shared.

Would have to agree. Stabilization is the only choice. Zak's clip with the VR lens and Steadi/Glide looks go~od. So, steadi/glide is a must.

Zak-

I though that clip looked great. Did you use a glidecam or something? I think if the data rates can be pushed higher with an update later on, the footage would we sharp. Other wise, I still think the dynamic range looks good, the high-lights roll nicely also.

Kholi/Zak-

Have you guys tried setting the d-lighting mode to high, and turning the sharpening all of the way down? Might make for more creamy video (with less artifacts)

I actually haven't employed D-Lighting at all but was plannin' on tryin' it. No better time than the present, aye?

I was just looking at nikon's track record for firmware updates and they have delivered on the d70, d80, d200, and d2x/Hs series with lots of updates. I bet if we let them know what we think of the d90 video, they can put it into a firmware update.

I would suggest these seemingly simple fixes:

-Full manual control just like if we were taking stills in M mode

-Higher-bit rate (25Mbit/s minimum 50Mbit/s recommended- possibly selectable by user?)

-A fix for the aliasing and the color banding on high frequency details in the image

Other than that, there is nothing stopping me from using this camera for a production from an indie-feature to a documentary (well, the client of course might stop me, but on personal stuff I am using a nikon dslr)

Kholi- try turning the sharpening all of the way down to see if it helps with the aliasing.

Newp. Not doin' the trick. I think that what Kenn, Elton and the others have said about the Debayerin' and Compression be the culprit, Matey.

Firmware updates, maybe?

I was screwing around today with my Red and ended up accidentally making a variable ND using 2 stacked Polarizers. Here is the footage(I am not changing the stop or shutter or asa the entire clip:

That might help you dial in exposure if yoiu can get the shutter right.

yeah, dug an old spiderbrace out of storage. i don't know which version because i have one of each.

i've a ton more footage coming... driving, fluorescent light, etc.

i think i got all the newest clips since i was on here last.
kholi outside
kholi driving
zak in his house with nice floors

anything else?

also, i haven't actually got to work with HD and to me the 720p looks good. The RS is still pretty wild. I wonder if there/can be a software solution like "stedicam" plugin. It's not too bad when it's controlled. And it seems to go away on wider shots.

might not be a sub for hv30/35 combo, but it looks like it'll replace my dvx/35combo
