The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

Zak,

Was that the highest quality 720 recording mode? If that's the raw file, wow, that is WAY too much compression for acquisition. QT player says its 10.41 mbs--from MJPEG. Yeesh.

Definitely less wobble on the wide end, it would appear. That's good.

Thanks for the clip

i see the datarate varies on every single clip. Kholi's have come in anywhere from 21mbits/sec down to 14mbits/sec depending on the clip.

There's definitely only one quality setting for 720p. No other way to increase bitrates or anything like that in menus.

Uhm, here's a theory: Is there any possible way that a cold camera could shoot better footage than a warm camera?

In the Manual, as I pointed out before, it says that the image may suffer from noise when the camera is warm.

Can this thing just not sit in LV mode too long or the image will suffer?

Or, is it the shorter the clip the better the compression?

well i need to figure this out. if i lock down a frame and don't move, i get 21mbits/sec. if i follow myself thru the apartment, 11mbits/sec. same settings. shot duration doesn't seem to matter.

There could be something to that, but I think the issue is simply over-compressed JPEG. That's how the photojpeg codec works when you encode with it--less detail in the scene, more compression for a selected quality level. It's VBR encoding without a minimum bit rate, which is too bad. I also see aliasing issues on those blinds at the end of the clip, that is probably the macroblocking of the big JPEG compression, and possibly so-so scaling in-cam.

Edit: also, I think you'll find the bit rate goes up on a wide/deep focus shot with lots of color variations and generally loads of detail complexity in the scene. That's been my experience when using PhotoJPEG or MJPEG as a codec for raw HD-SDI stuff I've shot with the H1.

+1

bad compression + poor de-bayering/scaling.

You can see the aliasing/macroblocking on the dashboard in this clip. It's yuck. =(

1st things 1st...hello all...I live in uk so we cant get one of these yet....ive been reading the thread here since the news about d90s release....well done kholi n zak for your enlightening early shots(never easy on a new cam,let alone an slr).
The wobbly walls on the whip-pans dont worry me...big worry is zaks kitchen cupboards(wooaahh compression like some old mpg1 playstation pirate dvd)...
btw Zak..this is seriously off subject..I love your polished wood floors:)

Anyone else unhappy with the noise? Looks like gain/chroma uncoolness and I can't figure out a way to decrease it. Thing sure loves some daylight, though.

:):):)

I was thinking the very same thing !!! :)

I was looking at the floor thinking "Mmmm we have similar flooring but not as shiny, maybe I should strip it and get it varnished like that"

It was funny to see someone thinking the same.

Quick Question

Quick Question

Hey guys, Best Buy has one waiting for me (asked for it by the SKU and they told me it'll take about an hour to dig it up) and I'm on my way to pick it up but just wanted your response on something.

What do you estimate the probability is that NIKON (or someone outside of NIKON) releases a firmware update that could correct some of these complications...for example the lack of a floor on the bitrate to reduce compression artifacting? I guess no one knows, but if someone's had experience in this type of thing I'd appreciate the opinion.

Thanks! (especially to those sacrificing their time with these new cameras to upload test footage)
