Yikes, that rolling sensor is pretty bad. Man oh man.

I have been playing around with it a bit. Sadly I can't figure out this shutter ISO thing either. I have noticed by pointing at TV screens that the exposure seems to stay the same while the gain or ISO change. But if you change your lighting to an extreme like locking it in bright sunlight then point it at a TV the shutter has obviously changed.
I shot a resolution chart, I'll post it later when I get home. I don't have a good way to view it right now but vertical resolution seems to be about 700
Someone just needs to write a hack for this thing so we can lock it down. I could probably live with the other issues.
Hey, this rolling shutter you guys are talking about. Is it the "breaking" or "tearing" effect i see on some of the videos?
Cause thats the worst thing my film un-educated eyes see wrong. And also the whitebalance but im sure thats adjustable.
Kholi- That is defiantly the shutter your changing- your onto something I CAN TASTE IT.
(oh, its jello I taste.mmmm)
Too bad that the movie mode seems to want to make things as difficult as possible. I think this cam is still a great deal for photographers though. It is basically going to give us D300 quality stills at a lower price. Did I read somewhere that there is a built-in intervalometer for time lapse? If so would one need a remote timer or does the D90 let you set things up and let 'er rip for time lapse?
I think that if I do pick one up I'll just shoot stills with it for a while, then worry about the movie mode later on. That way if I'm lovin' the still images then any disappointment with the movie mode will be softened a bit.
I have to say though, thanks so much for all the hard work Kholi. It is really appreciated. A couple questions though, have you taken any stills yet? If so, how do you like them and how do you like the camera as a straight up D-SLR?
White Balance is my fault. I just walked outside to do the shutter test. Next video employs a daylight balance and it's so spot on. Yum.
Rolling shutter is the SKEW effect going on. Check out the straight lines of the walls and square pillars as I wave the camera back and forth.
Hunter -- Yeah, that's what I thought. It looked like shutter adjustments to me and after more time playin' I'm concludin' that's exactly what it is.
shot my first test. uploading "NIKON D90 - First Test" to http://sabipictures.blip.tv
don't expect much, i'm way behind on Kholi in terms of experimenting with the details. lens had VR turned on and set to 18mm.
There's a lot of stuff that 480p is PLENTy good for, you guys. And there's a lot of stuff this camera can offer on a budget: namely a compact 35mm "feel" without all the extra hoo-has that we've all come to love and appreciate, and STILL appreciate.
Even downscaling to 480p using the silky smooth FIR algorithms of After Effetcs does not look fantastic, this was surprising to me to be honest, I thought you might loose much of the low resolution look, but quite a bit stepping was still evident (the inside curve of your tap in the bathroom shot for example).
Not that the D90 is a total write-off in this respect, but better results can be had with a HV30 and DOF adaptor.
