The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

yeah, the only thing keeping me from buying it is if I can't shoot under street light at night like in that jarvis clip. i imagine you can. but there seems to be a bit of a mystery as to how to bring the IsO to 3200.

I wonder, just a thought, if the camera actually Auto ISO's along with the Shutter. I know for a fact that AE-L Locks the shutter. I don't know if it's Auto ISO and just not showing it on the READ-out, though.

I'm not sure that the blockiness is due to the compression... I think it has to do with their scaling algorithm to scale full frame RAW sensor data to 720. Not a very easy or straight forward process to get it looking really good...

I learned a lot of this by watching Red's development and reading about how they tackled certain issues inherent to the technology - ie skew/rolling shutter, RAW scaling, debayering, OLPF and retaining detail without having to introduce sharpening on camera, etc...

You guys would definitely know more than me in this area. You're probably right. And, if it's something like that maybe it can be fixed in firmware updates?

okay so i imagine i'll need some accessories.

1. monopod
2. spiderbrace (have one of these)
3. 3 extra batteries to shoot all day. enough?
4. 2 16gb sdhc cards (each would hold about 2 hours of footage i believe)
5. water proof bag so i can shoot under water, in rain
6. remote for timelapse
7. a friend with sound gear (check!)

Some things need to be tweaked, David Pogue's samples in the NYT did not show much skew by example, just the exposure flickering. The running trains footage that was turn slow motion looked pretty after post work. The bycycle shot, exposure flickering.
Kholi try shooting with a monopod or a tripod and color correct it and stuff, (not now of course but whenever you get a chance and see what happens).

Hopefully it could be fixed in firmware, but at the end of the day, the hardware is always the limiting factor. For instance, if the sensor won't support a faster 'read rate' then the skew won't get better.

We'll see.

Either way, this is definitely an exciting development in having another tool in our creative tool belt.

Actually, man, I've been shooting clips on 4gb HDSC cards and havent even opened the second one. The clips aren't that large at all. 3 16gb could be more than you actually need. Maybe 4 4gb? I suppose it depends on what you're doing as well.

Monopod = yes.

Glidecam = fun.

What are you gonna do a bout focusing, Zak?

I'm still gonna keep this thing until somethin' better rolls around.

Hells yeah. Someone'll make it better. Just goes up from here. I still think it's pretty neat and I'll keep digging around in the menus to see what I'm missing.

John -- All good suggestions. In reality, it needs to go into an environment that's actually lit, etc. I'll see what I can do tomorrow.

why is it so hard for you to operate a dslr? never had a nikon?

is the autoiso active?
what's your autoiso activation shutter speed?

why others can have lots less rolling shutter and you can't?

why some say hv20 it's better at rolling when at 25/30p it not better at all? it's pretty much the same with only a 3mp sensor.
it is when shooting interlaced yes.

other HD camcorders use 3 ccds, 1mp each. that's why they don't roll as much

compression doesn't seem bad

even the canon sponsored website got better res out of it

i wonder if the iso is affecting the image quality. sort of like a picture. if the iso is at the wrong setting, it could make the image look like crap.

ando, i think kholi is kind of trying to make it work at his expense...lets be a little less demanding.

he's not helping at all. i appreciate his time spent on this but please read the manual, the whole manual. after all it's a dslr with a movie function, not something else.

i've read back many pages and he didn't even mention what autoiso settings are (max value, activation value). so how could he find correct ones or at least check how it operates on video? it's impossible for him at this moment. he's just wasting his time this way.

search for hv20's progressive videos before saying it's good or bad.

Kholi has said that there is virtually no documentation in the manual describing how the different dslr features and parameters affect the movie recording. From what he's been saying, the operation of the dslr does not stay the same when shooting movie. The exposure locks, shutter adjustments and other parameters are either not responsive or have to be locked in...

ahem. you've got it backwards. kholi is helping uncover a poorly documented feature. while you on the other hand are a distraction. and could very end kholi's motivation to share his findings with the rest of us.

the lack of other details in the manual i think it means what it means
it operates the same as with photo

remember it's not a video camera?

"strange" behaviour may be from autoiso active with who know what shutter speed activation values

we won't know if he doesn't know how dslrs work

and again i thank him for what he does for us. please ask if you need help with setting or other standard photo nikon stuff
