The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

Kholi, thanks you for the updates.

Blip.TV is the way to go. Trust me on this. The quicktime pops up immediately. Fast upload.

I have to admit, I am a little depressed about the results so far. I don't care about auto modes and even the rolling shutter stuff. But I wanted manual controls to work correctly. I hated all the HV20 hack stuff.

Ridiculous. So close and yet so far.

I think that's my biggest letdown so far. The lack of manual controls. I'm pretty sure ISO does absolutely nothing at all in video mode, but I'll be happy to be proven wrong.

The flowers on you tube look good. You controled the exposure pretty good, no jumps! Now the case of the wobbles needs to be taken care of. One thing at a time. Thanks Kholi and everybody that has contributed to this first tests.

given the footage from outside int eh street with chase jarvis shows some type of iso could you go outside and get the same results as jarvis with the settings you have now?

that's better. that at least brings it back to "only those with a discerning eye will notice the rolling shutter skew".

Converted to H.264 to save time and downscaled to 480p so that it could go up before people passed out.

Uploading the real AVI.

It looks good. Steadying the camera on something will improve it. Things are developing. You are some sort of D90 guinea pig.

Which ever method Nikon is using to scale the full sensor image down to the Live View is pretty brutal. The detail is definitely lacking. The color/contrast looks nice, but the details aren't there for real 720P.

Exactly. LIke I said, don't take my shakey hands as law. Cause, they're shakey. I can't hold light stuff away from my body like that and not get shake. The VR lens brings it back to acceptable, to be honest.

Which means you need somethin' to stabilize this thing and there's no sense in trying to skirt around it. You either get VR lenses or a glidecam/monopod

Car3o -- Can you link me to that footage? I don't think ISO was a manual deal. I just am not seeing ISO effect anything at all before or after recording. I do, however, see a TON of noise in lowlight/tungsten/warm light scenarios.

Yuck.

BTW, does anyone have the know-how to put pressure on Nikon to release firmware that will solve the manual settings problem?

That's exactly my sentiment. It's not 720p worthy. You can eck by with 480p no problem, but it ain't HD. I won't even try to throw it up on the LCD because I know it'll look like garbage.

Just as well, sharper lenses aren't going to help because I bet it's all the compression.

I thought people were looking for the "softer image of film" rather than the "harder look of video". BTW did you try the Picture Control Settings for vivid color, monochrome, etc. Also the sharpening setting? There must be more tricks to enhance the footage thru those.
The guys that did the Nikon comercial had some good shots although they missed the flickering.

Film retains a lot of detail. Resolution in video, to me, is one step closer to mimicking film. I personally do not strive for a soft look, which is why I try to rent reputably sharp glass.

I haven't tried the Picture Control Settings, that's a good idea. However, I'm not sure if that'll effect compression in the end. The blocky edges seem to be a compression thing going on and only look proper when scaled down to 480.

The colors already sparkle, the range/latitude is obviously there (to die for?), I think that there's enough resolution but the compression just isn't 720p/HD ready compression at all.

I myself thinks it still looks good.

yeah, the only thing keeping me from buying it is if I can't shoot under street light at night like in that jarvis clip. i imagine you can. but there seems to be a bit of a mystery as to how to bring the IsO to 3200.

Well, having had a look at the footage posted so far... props to Nikon for being 'the first,' so to speak, but uh... they are definitely the first, if you know what I mean. I don't see any real possibility of this becoming a viable indie cam. Other exciting uses, sure, but the rolling shutter is extreme. I thought my HV20 was annoying in this respect, but I have a new level of respect for it now!
