The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

Kholi- you're using M-mode on the top dial and you can set your f-stop & shutter before pressing record?

You can, but it doesn't do anything. Which is very strange. There's no change in the image as far as light transmission goes. I'm sure I'm just overlooking something, but right now it seems as if you can only adjust ISO and EXPOSURE.

And, if you have a non auto lens then F-stop manually. The problem is that there're no internal NDs, so you're gonna have to use the exposure and just deal with whatever "shutter" this thing has employed.

Thats odd because in every video I have seen of the camera in movie mode, you can see what stop your at and what shutter. Thats interesting.

Actually, there's no such thing as D-Movie mode entirely. It's not a switch. You just turn on Live View and from there you press okay and you can record. IN Live View it just uses the screen as a display and you can still take still photos.

The readout looks like it's mostly for the still photo and not the actual Movie/Video portion.

so can you set the shutter and stop in live view? and then press the "ok" button to record?

Nope, doesn't work like that. Live View is just an LCD version of the eyepiece viewfinder, if you think about it. You don't see the changes in real time when you change the aperture with Auto Lenses. The camera just does it when you snap a photo.

So, it actually doesn't even make sense for it to work like that as far as the movie mode is concerned.

If you can't adjust the shutter during movie mode, nor the F-stop without a manual lens, then I've found something I dislike about the camera's movie features.

The Shutter Adjustment is very important in a creative environment, F-stop can be overcome with the right set of lenses. ISO works, you can adjust "exposure" levels, but I want my shutter control.

Do you thing maybe with all the 30,000* hits from us users may have caused a semi DOS attack on Vimeo?

*based on speculation.

I think you should check out the manual. It might have answers.

Does yours look like this?

The thing is, I know liveview can be used in manual mode to take still photos. So I have to imagine that the settings you use for stills (including the mode and actual exposure settings) would translate to video. Or maybe not. What happens in manual mode? And is auto ISO turned on or off? Try manual with auto ISO off and see what happens...

Well, the stuff that was shot in that mall in Japan has a much slower shutter speed than the outdoors stuff like the skateboarders. If it's not directly controllable by the user, does this mean that we're back in the HV20-world of pointing the camera at something just to lock the exposure and then making adjustments from there?

So with the D90 you have to point the camera at something dark, or cover the lens or stop down with a manual lens, to force the camera to slow down the shutter, then you lock exposure, point the camera at your real subject and adjust the f-stop to get the correct exposure?

I think you need to reload the video Kholi.

There seems to be a bug

This shows up on the activity window of that page.

Can anyone tell me how to upload images?

It does, but again, the F-Stop and Shutter seem to have no effect on the video at all. I thought so at first, but it doesn't. I'm readin' the manual right now while Vimeo plays games with people.

This is exactly what I was thinkin'. It might be somethin' silly like that, where you have to lock it down after you've set it up. ugh. Not likin' that at all.

I think Vimeo is just trashed altogether, you guys. I tried to upload a second clip and its doing the same thing.

Hmm. That's disappointing BUT can be cured in firmware should Nikon decide we are smart enough to handle it. Maybe those settings are just what the camera would use if you pressed the shutter button to take a picture.

So if you are in manual mode and set shutter speed to 1/4000th, aperture to something small (maybe even below the f/8 limit) and ISO to 100 (and auto ISO turned off), you should get nice black video if it's honoring those settings. But you're saying it sets shutter to whatever it wants? I could have sworn one of the features was at least to be able to use aperture priority to set your depth of field before a video (with shutter and ISO varying, of course). And if auto ISO is turned off, does it still appear to be modifying the video gain?

ExactlY! And that doesn't happen at all. I'm indoors right now and trying what I can to get the shutter to do something in movie mode, it's doing nothing at all.

In short, I think Texanite is right. You'll have to:

A) Fight a light source to get the desired shutter speed you want.
B) AE-L Lock the shutter
C) Adjust the exposure with the Play Button + Up and down arrow
D) Use ISO and Manual Stops to further control light.

And, naturally, External NDs.

As far as ISO goes: Even at 200 I see noise but I'm sure it's the crappy compression scheme. Can't say too much about ISO as I haven't shifted it from 200 yet. Soon.

I thought I'd read that you can use any of the main modes while shooting video, including shutter-priority. If you were using a manual lens then you could always use shutter priority instead of manual mode and set the shutter. I guess the big question is whether or not it would then move into adjusting gain/ISO for you. You'd still have to pull an HV-20 style trick before locking the exposure, but at least you'd know what your shutter speed was and be able to control it.
