New nikon d90 dslr shoots 720/24p using the full sensor! (for $999)

dpreview has a hands on preview of the D90.

There are 39 still image samples from the D90. They also have 4 movie clips, 2 of which are straight from the camera, while the other 2 were converted into h.264 Quicktime files.

Gotta say, the stills have very nice definition. Even the high iso pics look very good.

However, the video has VERY annoying exposure changes during the pans. I read where the exposure lock button had to be continually pushed to lock exposure. That seems like a really dumb approach to exposure lock. As a longtime Nikon user I'm a bit perplexed over this lack of ergonomic foresight. :Drogar-Thinking(DBG

A clear example of this is the DSC_0043 movie file of the penguin.

Step through it and examine the color/exposure changes in the background right and left of the penquin.

Heck, even the entry level D50 has a one-touch exposure lock. :Drogar-Evil(DBG):.

Perhaps the 'testers' didn't know how to navigate the menus or perhaps the cam had a beta PROM?

If this exposure lock issue isn't 'fixed', I would call it a show-stopper in terms of using the cam as a video capture device.

It's been confirmed by an owner of the D90 that the exposure lock button can be set to 'latch'.

If you go to the setting for the AE-L/AF-S button you can select AE lock(hold), which will only require you to press the exposure lock button once.

The video quality looks quite nice as well, I'm a happy D90 owner :)

Is it possible to shoot video in manual exposure mode, instead of using exposure lock? This is important because most manual focus lenses do not have the electronics that would allow exposure measurement on this camera. I would like to use MF glass for the video since it's manual focus anyway - these lenses have longer and more precise focusing action.

Thanks, Ilkka
