The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

Um...

Um...

I did have a chance to touch D90 myself at an event in Tokyo.

One of the Nikon sales rep kindly let me shoot with my SD cards on my tripod (Manfrotto 503HDV).

So, I used it to film clouded people in shibuya station and also the famous cross section of Shibuya. I brought back the footage and saw it on my MBP.

My impression, color saturation is very good. It is similar to my HVX or maybe even better.

I did not think it has good resolution, at least not good enough to shoot clouded people from above. I wonder if it had something to do with M-JPEG compression. Details are simply pixelated.

Rolling shutter issue is there and it is much more serious than HV10, which I own.
Even when I was panning very slow using my video tripod, it somehow showed skewed image of walls.

I wish I could post the original footage but it is 200MB plus.

But, the image looked very much like film. Please don't ask me to define this comment. It just look like film. Period.

Would I buy it? For this price point, I don't see why not. I would not use it to film anything that moves around so I need to move the camera around to follow though.:(

I'd love to see that 200mb footage Sugoroku

I'm sure everyone else as well as it would put an end to this 43 page ongoing debate

Yes, rolling shutter wobble (on the backs of the foreground skateboarders in the BMX video) is evident on the sample on Vimeo - and as I said in an earlier post, the footage lacks definition to the extent that it looks like it has been put through a median filter.

Vimeo will take your 200MB quite happily :) (you can upload 500MB a week)

Exposure

Exposure

The main reason I went to the event was to confirm the exposure issue.

As long as I keep pushing the AE/AF button, it locks exposure.

As for putting up the footage, I would have to say, it is not something that is pleasing to see for I had only limited subject/angle/lens/lighting condition to shoot to and also was told not to shoot faces of people as much as possible. Also, I was not sure how to focus using LCD screen much, I mean, it looked focused but it was not as much.

Also, for the shot of clouded people from above, I was shooting it thorough building window which was thick and had some kind of smoke on it. So picture is not very clear but it shows the pixelated portions here and there.

I have said enough excuses. Now I am gonna try posting it.

It may take time for I never tried posting on Vimeo.

When I finish posting it, I will let you know.

bittorrent...you provide a tracker and we download from you...it wouldn't be worth trying to explain.

i guess vimeo is your best bet.

Maybe there is a small device we could make to keep the button depressed ?

Any footage straight from the camera would be of interest to many people here - and very much appreciated. :)

Cheers ! :)

Vimeo is very simple, just join up (free of course) and use the simple interface to upload the original footage.

If you run into any problems - ask here !

I'm a bit concerned about this rolling shutter problem

Exposure we can fix in post, rolling shutter HAH

Sorry if I missed this or "misunderstood" but what is this exposure issue? You have to keep a button held for auto exposure? Also, can the camera support up to the typical 1600 ISO for even the camera mode? That would put major advantages over the current HD crowd, but of course would sacrifice quality greatly from poor treatment of high ISO grain within the (likely) high compression it will have.

BTW I'm surprised by some of the RED hate going around in here. There's no problem with drawing comparisons between Scarlet and Nikon, but try to keep the naysaying out unless you personally have dealt with one of their products. Calling RED supporters "fan boys" and then concluding with "GOOO Nikon!" probably won't help prove your point...just a thought. Last I checked no one else had a 4k, high latitude, ISO adjustable, SLR mountable, Handheld camera for under $27k (tripod and all) available NOW. That's all I'm going to say.

Here's a better viewpoint:
Can Nikon create a premium line driven by these D90 features?
-2/3" vs full 35mm
-8x F2.8 zoom vs Removable SLR
-both have rolling shutter
-Sound?
-compression
-3k (2.5 with bayer) vs 720 or possibly 1080?
-24/60/120/180 fps vs 24 (maybe at least up to 60)?
-$3000 (likely $6000 equipped) vs $2000-3000?

Thanks sugoroku - but it's showing up as private right now. You might have to change a setting somewhere so the rest of us can see it.

So what good would it do if the shooting conditions were like this? Can't focus properly and thru a thick window with some kind of stain, give me a break. How can you judge the image like this. Thats a total diservice to all of us.
