The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

I think RED was and is looking for its share of the market and in a not so far future there will be a tecnological convergence with what are offering the "big" companies. (as one can observe with the D90 for example) RED one will become cheaper and D90 like cameras will become more sophisticated. But it was RED who pushed and accelerated this development and it's not certain that they will be the winner of this game. So one really should show respect to such a "small" start up company and be happy to live in times wherer such things are still possible. (Or think about the Tesla Roadster - I would really like to drive one with a RED one stored in the trunk:))

Why is it that when a small American company tries to make an affordable digital cinema camera, they get flogged.

But when a multi-billion dollar slr enterprise makes video a possibility, they are received with rejoicing.

First off, your premise is flawed if you're talking about the RED Scarlet versus the Nikon D90. Nobody is flogging RED for making the Scarlet. On the contrary, people have been very excited about the Scarlet for a good while now. Even those people who aren't part of the Cult Of Red. Additionally, there are a ton of complaints about the D90 already, and it's not even in our hands. So to pretend that there's some blind priase for Nikon and mass hatred for RED is completely distorting the reality of the situation.

But even if we suppose for a moment that you're premise actually was true and that RED is being "flogged" for making the Scarlet compared to Nikon being praised, it's certainly not for the reasons you imply. The differences between the two are not based around WHO they are but rather WHAT they're offering and not offering.

Nikon HAS made an affordable digital "cinema" camera priced at $1,000 that will take SLR lenses and will provide 35mm DOF

RED is TALKING about making a somewhat affordable digital cinema camera priced at $3,000 and won't take SLR lenses or provide 35mm DOF

The difference here isn't that one is "small" and "American" and that the other is a "multi-billion dollar enterprise". The difference is that the Nikon product will be available in a week or so, will be a third of the price of the Scarlet and will provide things like 35mm SLR lens use and 35mm DOF. Nikon is offering features that the crowd in the 35mm adapter forum of dvxuser wants. Why would it be surprising that people here would be more excited about the D90 than the Scarlet which does NOT offer the specific things that people in this forum are looking for?

The fact that RED also has a pompous, holier than thou, we ARE the revolution attitude is just icing on the cake and makes them really easy to dislike.

haha, I think I have a fan. I would like to encourage frisco to send me a PM to fully understand what is meant by this. You've peaked my curiosity.

I'll do it publicly.......

Chase Jarvis is obviously a talented still photographer that has a corporate relationship with Nikon. He has a full time staff and a personal studio. You do the math.... He obviously has the billing to support such an effort.
- How many employees do you have?
- How many sq. ft. is your studio?

The Nikon D90 is a sub $1000 camera aimed at a target market of amatuers that have moved up from Point and Shoot ranks. This market is for people to explore there visual creative talents past birthday parties, vacations, weddings, babies first steps etc.

Chase agreed to use this camera by him and his staff to capture images on the fly, not as a main camera in one of his productions.

Was the video footage he provided Nikon "Top Drawer" creative footage like he could probably do from looking at his website......No, That would be way over the heads of the target market.

Was it just about the right level to market a sub $1000 DSLR with HD video capability for Joe Photo enthusisist to play on his 42" Flat Panel TV..... You bet it is....

Did Nikon intend for Joe Film Maker like yourself to consider this camera over primary video cameras? Probably not yet on there first try....

I saw your still photography on your website.... Well, I don't think you could support a staff and studio with it......

Just didn't seem fair to use the ass comment.

I'm just as excited about the Nikon D90 development as the next person and I also have high hopes for it..... But just remember..... This is a sub $1000 DSLR camera being marketed for mostly "Family Use" to shoot mainly stills and some video.

Funny. While we are talking about RED their website is apparently under construction. Is there something to be announced?

Wow. Its easy to stir something up on here. Not my intentions.

Texanite-

I wasn't talking about the scarlet at all.

It's just amazing watching a company like Red unfold, and seeing how much **** they have gotten from the first announcement of a camera.

Anyways- a camera is just a tool, its funny how much love/hate comes from people about it.

Donate a D90 to Cineform and find out

Donate a D90 to Cineform and find out

David Newman at Cineform is willing to test it for HDMI capture if someone can donate him a D90 for temp use..

Do you think we could send the output from the CMOS out through HDMI before it gets compressed to M-Jpeg ?

It would be great to record uncompressed footage straight from the HDMI, although might negate the advantages of the small form factor.

Okay, so what camera are you talking about that has gotten RED completely flogged? The RED ONE? One quick look at reduser makes it clear that that's not true. And one good look at this thread or engadget shows all kinds of criticism of the Nikon D90.

And even if it was true, which it's not, what reaction would you expect from the 35mm adapter portion of dvxuser when the option is between a $1000 camera that will be available in thousands of Best Buy sversus a $17,500-$42,000 camera that can't be bought anywhere?

I know this is not addressed to me, but c'mon !! . . . .

Chase Jarvis is obviously a talented still photographer . . . .

Was the video footage he provided Nikon "Top Drawer" creative footage like he could probably do from looking at his website......No, That would be way over the heads of the target market. . .

So, they got Chase Jarvis to run the camera through it's paces because he was a talented photographer, but they were not expecting him to produce "Top Drawer" creative footage as that would be over the heads of the target market ?

An odd collection of misanthropy and ill logic ! :)

Did Nikon intend for Joe Film Maker like yourself to consider this camera over primary video cameras? Probably not yet on there first try....

'their'

I can imagine the marketing meeting on that one !

I saw your still photography on your website.... Well, I don't think you could support a staff and studio with it......

Whether his photography is good or bad is irrelevant to his argument, or are you suggesting that because you don't think his photography is any good it therefore follows that his criticism of Chase Jarvis's video work is negated ?

?

Lee Wilson did a good job with what I am probably everyone else is thinking, but I'll speak on the subject.

I'll do it publicly.......

I'm very glad you ignored my request to be a prick to me in private, but I'll just retort and leave it at that.*sarcasm*

Whoa man. I'm a filmmaker. Not a photographer. Thanks for visiting my website, as I am currently uploading some of my photography. These photos are me and my trusty 1984 Nikon FE2 35mm film camera wondering around town with friends or on film sets when I'm not busy. I'm not a photographer, it's my hobby.

First of all, Chase Jarvis is a talented photographer. Have you looked at the sample images that he brought back for Nikon or the images posted on Nikon's website? They are way above the amateur point and shoot photographer you are referring to.

I really doubt Nikon's new advertising strategy is to guesstimate the talent of their users and only show results from their new camera that are of equal caliber. Of course not, but this is what Chase did with the Video aspect, and what you are defending. Why not show top shelf gorgeous video? Do you think amateur photographers will run away scared of how good it looks? Get out.

For such a talented Photographer, either Chase has little experience with video, or just plain didn't attempt to bring back impressive footage. Either way it leaves us in the dark until we can take our stab at testing the capabilities. So if you want to simply defend Chase's creative ability, I will acknowledge that I think he has more potential then the crap he brought back, (in strict regards to the video footage).

Did Nikon intend for Joe Film Maker like yourself to consider this camera over primary video cameras? Probably not yet on there first try....

Dude, Nikon has established an advertising strategy. It's not to represent their camera with amateur examples, no matter who the target market is. You seem to think that this camera is for amateurs, and although you could be right, Nikon is not going to represent the camera with likewise examples. But they did do that with the video aspect.

Please PM me if you wish to continue to argue about my personal integrity and talent when taking photos with my hobby camera. You are welcome to continue to post here, when talking about the d-90, Nikon's advertising strategy, or Chase's footage.

PS: For those interested, you can find my photography work at my website under the 'still' section. It's all 35mm film from an old all manual camera. It's mostly me taking photos when I'm hanging with friends, on sets, or just in that mood. The photos will take about 1 min to load before you can zoom in. Color photos going up soon.

OMG! I just looked at your pictures and frisco was right they are really very very bad (some don't even have any colour!) ;P - so taking this new information into account I must conclude the following:

Your photography is bad . . .

therefore . . .

Your conclusions about another photographer . . .

Who shot some pretty average to poor quality video . . .

On a DSLR . . .

Must be wrong !

I am sure my logic will stand up to any kind of test you wish to subject it to.

;P

I saw some other D90 footage (baby crawling on floor) up on Vimeo and was going to post it here but it seems to have gone.

"Nikon D90 sample video" was deleted at Thu Aug 28 2:02:58 2008. We have no more information about it on our mainframe or elsewhere."

Lol!

Who am I to judge video quality?! I'm not a cinematographer!... oh wait.

PS: Who is posting this D-90 footage on vimeo? I thought it wasn't out yet...

A few cameras are out there for hands on tests at various magazine websites, perhaps that might be the source ?

Or some fun Nikon chicanery ?
