The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

I think this is a silly concern. They're billing this as a product for the consumer, not a video professional. We all like it because - well the light loss from a 35 adapter sucks! I'm going to wait and see some reviews because I've read everything so far and well... it has either a 2mb/s signal or a 53mb/s signal?

On the heat issue, I don't know if they would included an HD shooting mode if it overheated with the consumer level market in mind. The math just doesn't work out - 5mins for HD, 20mins for SD? That is still... if the sensor is being used it would overheat at the same rate. If the processor was overheating, it would have to work harder to compress smaller image sizes.

Regardless, all of you have gone ape-shi* over this... yes 35mm adapters will die off - probably in 2 years. But let's see some reviews before we all jump the gun and sell off all of our gear. ;-)

Cheers.

Hmmm... speak for yourself, friend:laugh: There's a LOT more to it than just light loss. This is potentially the start of something huge... not just a camera that shoots video. Is this particular model the answer? maybe, maybe not; but if not, it's not far off.

Quoted from DavidChia:

Cheap SD cards...

DOF (full sensor)...

small size ...

records 1280 x 720...

shoot right side up...

no G.G problems...

no Vignetting...

no back focus problems...

what loss of light?

$900...

right... i guess it will take a few generations till quality video stuff will come to dslrs... i'm glad it's coming.. and i'm skipping d700 and waiting for d90.. but hey... what about sound? :) i guess photo camera will never evolve to video camera :D

Don't get me wrong Ryan. I agree with everyone that this is some cool sh@#, but at the same time the reason I'm mostly interested in it is because with my Canon XH-A1 and Sgpro - light loss is horrible as compared to this. If I use a f2.8 lens with Sgpro, and my camera zoomed in to the focal plate - Well my camera is at an f2.4, Sg losses about 1 stop, and the lens is F2.8... which means I'm essentially shooting at an f6.2 in terms of light loss.

That sucks.

I can't wait to see this more widespread, and according to gizmodo the new canon 5d mark II (which if it costs the same as 5d -$2499) should have this same, or better feature. Canon is much better with their image processors than...well... anyone. And if the rumors are true, and the 5d mark II shoots 1080p, goodbye focal adapter - hello SLR ;-)

I have a feeling that if and when Canon releases a movie mode on its slr's you can bet its going to be crippled in some major way. Maybe one day Canon will step up their "high-end" video cameras though with one of their large cmos sensors and an EOS mount.

It's going to shoot onto a tape like XL-H1, those dumb bastards. lol!

Love canon, but why?! why tape?!

Just saw this on B&H... thought it was interesting.
AVI Motion JPEG Movie with sound
HD (1280 x 720 @ 24 fps)
VGA 640 x 424 @ 24 fps)
QVGA 320 x 216 @ 24 fps)
Clip length limited only by available memory

Seems we may never know until it comes out.

film camera's do not record sound!!! they sync it! if they added the audio inputs then it would probably jack the price up more. it's so frustrating seeing people ask "what about sound?"

Oh, I hear ya. I too shoot with the SGpro, and as much as I absolutely LOVE the image it produces, it's still a pain in the arse on many levels...

That doesn't make sense, does it? "limited only by available memory"? it shoots onto SD cards, and they vary in size, so if this was the case we could shoot all we want. Unless there's some sort of internal memory needed in addition to the cards, which very well could be the case.

I guess we'll wait and see. I'm in the market for a new DSLR anyway as my D80 could use an upgrade, so I'll *probably* be picking one of these for stills regardless.

I honestly never record in camera sound unless the project is on the cheap. CF or SD "dat" recorders are so cheap these days that it doesn't matter... all you have to do is clap it.

Found some original footage of the D90's HD video on Vimeo - doesn't seem to have the rolling shutter issue that everyone is worried about. Seems completely fine to me.

Yea... but I'm starting to think that those reviews are pre-scripted. That is a british tech review channel... i mean give me a CNET review or something where they actually use the camera. I want to know why I can only shoot 5 mins at a time. If it is a heat problem as some have stated...**** it! If it is a memory buffer issue, as I believe it is, that is totally fine. I can wait 20-30 seconds between a take for the camera to sync up... but 15mins.... it could make an ok b-camera. Especially if that review i read about it taking up 400mbs for 1 minute of footage is true. But those specs sound retarded.

never noticed i couldn't write f(u)ck sh(i)t or other curse words on here... kinda lame. they come out as **** ****... wonder if I can write the word asshole?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! nominated for best post of the month.

Actually, most forums are that way...

It is a great still camera for less than I was planning to pay for the D300, which is comparable in its photography specs. 12 megapixels and much more. Movie mode is a big bonus for those of us who are fortunate enough to work in both fields. If you think it ain't going to work for you just don't buy it. There will be plenty of people on line to get it, trust me. And if it turns out to be a competitive motion capture camera those first adopters will be trailblazers. If not it will still be a superb tool for my photography work. Its a win win situation.

I mean... come on... how many people under the age of 18 do you think actually go to this site? It can't be more than a few thousand nerds from all over the globe.

I want curse words added back in!

Link to 720p footage:

Looking at the opening shot, the low-light capability looks really good. Using ultra fast 1.2 or 1.4 Nikkor lens would even yield more. I wonder what the ASA was in that shot.

I wonder how it is making the 1280 x 720 images. The sensor is 4,288 x 2,848. Maybe sensor is read using 2x2 binning and then downscaled 1:1,5. Active sensor area is 3840 x 2160 then, which is about 21 x 12 mm.
