I am guessing that since the Dell website does not say anywhere that a 64 bit OS is required to use 4gb, that they just add it for you. Unlike on HP and many other websites..............
 
I don't know, I'm far from a computer guy,...that's just always what I've read. (32bit = 3 gig of ram)

And I've heard of people running CS3 on a 64 Vista with success. But then I've also heard it's not a good combo. What is the deal with that?

I have about 6-7 months before I'm getting a desktop, but I'm sorting this stuff out now.
 
Might not be a bad idea to check Craigslist in your area for a 1 year old iMac with the 24/2600 GPU and Core 2 Intel proc. Should be right around your budget and IMO, you won't have to deal with the software bloat of the new PC. 20 years of PCs, just switched to Mac a year ago. FCP and AE have been a delight. Whether my MBP iMac or Mac Pro.

Just a suggestion. I know it is the difference between new and used, but there is a reason that computer is $599:)

I thinks he only has Adobe CS3 for the PC..........But still a good suggestion.

Its valid now until the 4th of sept. Upgrade the processor to the Q9300, and the graphics to the ATI 2600 pro, and your set. Price is 799. Free shipping, tax will be ontop of that. I would expand your budget at least to that if you want to get a solid system.

As far as the memory goes, xp AND vista only use 3.x ram because there are limited memory addresses in a 32 bit system and computers are currently at the max. Your amount of ram will depend on what other components you have in the system that use memory addresses. Your unlikly to use more than 3GB.

Vista will show you 4GB in the system specs if you have the SP1 upgrade, but is still unable to utilize the full 4Gb and any one time due to the adrress limitations. Don't buy 64 bit yet, most stuff is not compatible.

Jimmy, that code does not work for the dell e value code thing. AIt requires two sets of numbers and letters. If im in the wrong section, send me a link to the right one.

My bad, I do it all day. I should explain myself better. Just type:

ref-DDDEDA4

So, ref in the first box and the code in the second. I've been using it all day so it should work but technically its only valid 9/2-9/4.
