"The Fiction" a DP blog

Nice shirts there guys :-) I'll be in New York likely during HD Expo...we'll have to hook up. That football shot from beneath the bed is just plain cool.

Hey guys thanks. Yes, we have a tiny core crew of 4 and depending on the days more people come.
The large library/office is the end of the movie and its kind of like another reality and supposed to look much different than the rest of the movie. Kind of the happy ending feeling but not that happy. I loved that it had the big windows and wanted to mimmic it as much possible. We ran out of daylight so it got harder to keep the look going but I think we did a decent job on it.

The thing about the little girl shot that the others don't have is that the 300 didn't get the blue gel so she has a slight warm tone on her left. When I set up most of the shots so far for this I used the window as the motivation and they all have been big windows so I just have been trying to get the lights as close to the window as possible and then tweak as needed on the fly. The director wanted a similar look to "Signs" and M. Knight seems to use a lot of single source lighting so I have been doing the same but using small lights for accents here and there.
I do love the attic scenes too. Even though I thought maybe I was pushing the HVX too far into the darks we still went with it and they hit the mark for the scene. Mike said he can see it some detail on the Nebtek even though we coudn't see it on the other monitors so we went with it and took a chance. That shot with the old catchers mask in it was looking like a silhouette on set but has slight detail in the screenshot. I'm happy with all of those shots.
When is the HD expo? Hope its before the end of the feature so we can get some of that new GG in there. :)

New shots from this week.

The end before the end.

Reality isn't what it seems.
I had a 1k outside the window in the background and used a 300 with diffusion to bring out the recorder.

This shot was from above the bed with a glidecam and when he sits up we rotate up as we pull back revealing the room.

The room

This shot I rolled the camera from this angle to the left revealing his typewriter right below the frame. Its a shot that messes with your senses when you see it big as does the upside down does when you see it in motion. If you notice, the room has changed from the other earlier shots.

This breakfast scene was all super slow moving dolly shots and as you can see there were giant windows all over so the lighting motivation came from that direction using a 1k window side, diffused 650w above, and a 300 for hi-lights.

I just shot this real quick while we were setting up cause it looked so nice and I kept my warmth that I usually love in this one.

Yes... Fire back time...

Great to see you in action.

Thanks. We are getting ready to start today's trek with all outside shooting but its kind of raining. Oh dang, the sun just peaked out just as I typed that. Hope at least the clouds come back so we don't have to break out the big 7 foot silk.

New joints from the last 2 or 3 days. Too tired to comment on them but I will later this week.

Super tiny room we had to work with here. YIKES it was hard to light and it was on the second floor and the house was elevated some for the basement. Made getting a light out side the window a pain. Had to tape a light to a tall ladder.

More BTS shots added to the folder.

Heres Mike telling the story about that one time in band camp.

Telling ghost stories.

Right after we started something fell "suspiciously" on the upper level so I was trying to get a pic of whatever it was. Supposedly there is a ghost of a dog in that house.

cool, looks great! So are all these new ones shot with the cfx? So far how has it been for you, have you noticed better specuality and bokeh? Where you able to test it out at f/4.0-f/5.6?

Thanks

Aram! Just read through this thread, and checked out all the screenshots... this is looking terrific! Can't wait to see some moving footage!

Its a lastolite 78x78" skylite kit from B&H. Around $450 I think and comes with two avenger grip heads, 1 &1/4 diffuser, sunfire reflector, & frame. So far it has come in very handy on our last two productions.

More on the CFXL to follow.... Only the last shot on page 5 is with the CFXL.

Aram does some pretty amazing things with our modest light kit. I learn alot from him every day.

Aw shucks Mike. :)
Actually... I secretly ask Tia where I should put them most of the time.
That skylite kicks ass. Here are some shots from the other shoot.

Another day in the cards. We just got another HVX with a 32 gig card and it feels like we have a lifetime of shooting time. We used the CFX again and tweaked it to get some really nice images. Watching the dailies on the 50 inch tonight were very impressive. The new Bokeh was just gorgeous. I left the cards in the other camera at the location so I can't post anything tonight but tomorrow I will get some up. I thought I was going to have time to get some moving shots edited into a little compilation but time flies so fast and I haven't seen my daughter in a month so I wanted to spend as much time as I could with her. I will try to get something going soon.
