so who else had a bad day?

hi there,

so at about 1pm I had a motorcycle accident (with my Honda ST1300, who's rear brakes were replaced this morning). A car thought it had enough time to turn at a light, first it looked like it was stopping, then it went. So we met each other in the intersection. I really don't think the driver of the car took a chance on purpose to get across, I really think he made an honest mistake. But bouncing of a car is never fun!

the bike apparently doesn't look to good, I'll see over the weekend. Spend 7 hours in the hospital, doing scans, ultrasounds of blood vessels, etc, and getting stitched up again.

The stupid thing is, I was not wearing my biking jacket because I just quickly went somewhere, so the lesson learnt is no matter how short trip put on your safety gear!.

Cause now my left shoulder and upper arm has a few holes in it, he he, most they could stitch, just one had no flesh to pul together, but with time it will heal ok, not a big spot. leaving a bit of a scar. I just have to help my left arm move around in the limited range before the pain wins, but a couple of days it will be better.

Pain there is plenty of, my neck and shoulder ofcourse, but thank God no other injuries, and my neck X-ray's looks fine.

The fact that I'm home, with "minor" injuries I'm grateful for, it could easily been worse.

I guess I probably posted it to get it out of my system, thanks for listening, hope I didn't waste to much of your time,

thanks,
Derrick

That always sucks. Take it from a guy who had an argument with a 67 Lincoln Continental over a lane, and also T Boned a van. Ironically enough, I actually came out on top when I took on a grove of Pine Trees, and didn't do too bad when I took out a 6' hurricane fence.

Geez man, at least your keeping a sunny disposition through it all. I wish you luck and heal quick!

Yes, glad you're still with us. :)

As Jack Handey once said:
During the Middle Ages, probably one of the biggest mistakes was not putting on your armor because you were "just going down to the corner."

Just glad you're basically okay.

There's an American motorcycle expression, ATGATT - All The Gear, All The Time. Just in case there's some stoopid-ass cager lying in wait at the next light...

My last run-in with a car was a Pontiac that lane-changed into me on the freeway; totaled my bike, totaled his car (hoo-rah!) and since it was 100% his fault, he had the honor of buying me my next bike.

Do you normally ride with an air vest? I started wearing one last year and I think I'll stick with it.

thanks everyone, i guess we all go through these things from time to time (hopefully extremely far apart).

yeah I really didn't skimp on buying safety gear, the jacket is fully armored with protection pads, etc... but no help to you if you don't have it on, he he.

Today the pain is a little worse, but as some of you could testify out of experience, the first 2 days are a bit painfull, and then it just gets better from there.

I'll post a pick somewhere over the weekend if I can get to the bike, not sure I can drive my stick shift. My arm is not co operating yet, he he.

thanks for the well wishes everyone,
Derrick

Glad to hear you're doing alright.

As far as I'm concerned - if you get hit by a car and are still okay to come back and post on 'user, that's a damn good day, not a bad day.

Very glad to hear you are okay. I come from a motorcyle family (no, not a gang, LOL) and all of them have been in accidents and bear the scars. I alone stand free of motorcycle accidents in my family, but then I was hit by a car while riding my bike, so still....

Seriously, glad you're ok, if sore.

so the lesson learnt is no matter how short trip put on your safety gear!.

This is also, incidentally, how babies are made....sort of. Never underestimate the importance of protection, dude.

Whoa! Scary situation. Glad you're okay. I don't ride but have lots of friends who love it and they all have stories like yours. I've never hit a bike, but you guys can be really hard to see sometimes.

Yeah, chicks dig the scars.

thanks everyone, today the pain is worse. but as some of you know, that's normal

I expect to feel sore for another day or two, and in 7 days the stiches can come out.

I made the news paper though, he he he, I'm sure there is easier ways to get in the paper....

I'll post a pic of the bike tomorrow.

Thanks for all the comments, appreciate the support, and also enjoy the laughs of some of the post!

I had a motorcycle accident a couple of weeks ago, actually. It's a similar story to yours.

There was an 18 wheeler making a turn from two narrow roads. If anyone knows the Burbank area, it was the intersection of Victory and Western.

So this 18 wheeler is turning right and I'm getting ready to turn left going in the same direction. But the 18 wheeler is turning too wide and the person in left turn lane where the 18 wheeler is turning into has to back up to let the truck by. This takes about 3 minutes total, I'm guessing. Meanwhile, I'm in the intersection, still needing to turn and the light's changed red for a while now, so I start to go. There was a car that needed to turn left so he cuts me off in order to turn left (remember, I'm STILL in the intersection). After I avoid hitting him, I start to go, but the guy who was behind the truck turning right runs the red light and makes his turn. I grab the front brake hard (it's a sports bike) and the back wheel winds up about a foot off the ground. It then slams against the road and shatters a bunch of parts.

The good news is I had all my gear on and the only thing that happened was a stiff neck (which has been worked out by the chiro by this point) and a bruised rib. No cuts or scrapes or broken anything... just 3500 bucks worth of damage to the bike... :(

the bike apparently doesn't look to good, I'll see over the weekend.

Damn man, like my dad said after my (I think it was my second) car crash, "forget the damn car, we can replace it, but we can't replace you though"

did you experience "bullet time"?

I think maybe it was the whole bike that went down and shattered a bunch of parts.

Just a stoppie by itself shouldn't cause that kind of damage.

Tom?
