Making a New Feature... What Do You Want To See?

I'm embarking on another feature soon. tomorrow I meet with the actors to begin developing the characters. I plan to make this DIY production very transparent via live webcam and video podcasts, and wanted to get an idea from you, what aspects of this development stage are you most interested to see in action?

is it developing characters? using improv? rehearsals? producing? scheduling? budgeting?

As much as you can really! I'd love to see budgeting and character work personally.

Thanks for this, looking forward to it. Good luck!

Interesting Zak. Every time I see a piece of your work I admire it because I always think that I'd love to make a movie like that someday. My personality, however, isn't that free-flowing. I encourage improv on set, but there's like a percent limit. "Ok, that improve was great, but you changed more than 15% of the script, so let's reel that back a little bit." So, the short answer is i'd love to see how you use improv so effectively in your work.

Everything... I enjoy the whole process, and specifically am curious as to your approach to everything Zak.

Hmmm... I've got one. A breakdown of one entire scene. Preferably a semi narrative scene but with movement (like IFHY, for instance), from rehearsal to final take, but main focus on the filming itself. How many takes, direction given in between, camera angles from various takes, how you first approach the scene, out takes, initial light setup, audio equipment and placement, the whole nine yards.

Basically, have a camera rolling on everything that happens from the second the actors walk on set, to when you say "cut" for the last time of the day (or scene). Along with that a commentary of what's going on and why.

I'm always curious to see how various directors initially approach a scene, and how it develops and changes throughout the process.

Actually, now that I think about it... I'd love to see a breakdown of this from a lot of different directors...

Def the improv stuff. I've done a considerable amount of that in the past, but never with anywhere near your success.

You know what would be interesting? Literally everything. Follow me here...

On many DVD's we see 'behind the scenes' and 'the making of' stuff, but it's usually select material from the actual shoot itself. What I'd like to see you do is have a documentary camera follow you from Day One. Go through the whole process -- script development, casting, getting your crew, literally everything from pre-pro through post. You'd have to market that as a separate DVD set, but I bet a lot of people would find it fascinating as hell.

What do you think, folks?
