Best Technique to Get a Smooth Zoom ( Zooming In All the Way )

Hi,

I'm fairly new to the DVX100B, and I am wondering what's the best technique to zoom in all the way with smooth deceleration at the end. I have the BeBob controller, but it doesn't seem to be any better than what I can do manually.

I am mainly using this during interviews, where I want to tighten up the framing as the interview progresses, and I want it to look smooth. Any tips?

...Just had a thought. What if I used a 2x zoom-through telephoto lens attachment, so that I would not have to stop at the limit of the zoom, but rather about half of what the maxium zoom could do.

I'm thinking that because I'm reaching the end of the zoom range, it's near impossible to do this subtly, but maybe with a 2x telephoto would make this possible. Anyone ever try this?

The DVX (and HVX) have three fixed zoom speeds, and don't ever really "feather" well, regardless of what controller you use. In MANUAL mode you can zoom as smoothly as your fingers will let you. I at times have used a follow-focus rig modified to control the zoom rather than the focus, to get smoother, more easily-accessible zooming from the DVX....

I had a director ask me to do a sloooowww zoom on the DVX that would take 90 seconds to complete. I told him it was impossible. The DVX100 doesn't allow subtle feathering of a zoom - in or out - very frustrating! I'm using my HD100 for that nowadays.

Get a dolly and rails.

For me, zooming is a no-go. But that´s my personal taste, others love it.

You can do a smooth zoom. Come on now, if you really need a smooth zoom then use your fingers and be as steady as possible, make a little device that will help you zoom smoother. I read somewhere that they use a straw or stick with some rubber on it to help with zooming, try that or you can just practice.
