J.R. Hudson is a junkie!

By his own admission, J.R. is addicted to analyzing films. If you haven't seen his website, you need to check this out. Currently, he's got great articles on Visual Language and you'll be surprised at the interesting takes he has on POV, line crossing, blocking, and all the other often missed fundamentals to great film-making. There's a very good article on lighting for Dynamic Range by J.Van Auken in there as well.

I don't know J.R. Hudson. I'm not promoting this for a friend or anything. I simply found this site incidentally, and I'm thinking there may be a lot of people who missed the few posts referring to it. Kind of a bump, I guess, but I find the site very helpful. You will, too.:Drogar-Mark-07(DBG)

I don't really like promoting sites, but this is the kind of stuff I'm always trying to find. This should be promoted more, because I only found this accidentally. There should be a better way to find this site (Jared...). Just really glad I found it and wanted to share it with those who missed it.

J.R....Thanks for doing this!

BFF...LOL....

Hells yes!!! I didn't know this existed until I saw the "Wolfman" thread JR posted here. I'm totally thrilled with the discovery. Not sure how I'll explain to the Mrs. why I've been absent from the dvx board, but she's overlooked my other infidelities thus far.

:dankk2:

i am addicted to reading them. after i read the visual language on christine i had to go dig up my disc and watch my daughter also loves them. Thanks to J.R for all the hard work and keep them coming.

Good gravy, I try to read DVXuser and this is the first thread. Now the "new posts" search is timed out because I've spent the past hour over there and I'm just getting started. Thanks a lot.

(shi++ers!) :)

Furthermore -now I have to go netflix Christine. I got completely immersed. Time doesn't grow on trees.

hey all! sorry to bump up such an old thread, but does anyone have any copies of the Visual Language series on John's blog all those years ago? They were pretty amazing, and I've been trying to get a hold of a copy since the site went down. Unfortunately, somehow or the other I haven't been able to get through to John himself to ask. Even went through the trouble of trying to contact him through myspace and Vimeo, but haven't had any luck. here is as much as I was able to recover:

Thank you for the heads up on this.

It has been so long since I've done any of these. I was working on a Cop Land article when my hard drive crashed. I have thought of doing this series again; have gotten a lot of requests and didn;t even know there was any trace of evidence of these articles online.

Perhaps I should consider a revisit.

Thank you for the interest. For me, it taught me (at least my own perception) when I broke down these shot for shot.

Really helped me understand what I was seeing.

They were a great read, and sparked the kind of conversation that isn't so common in these parts (or any parts?)

Please do consider redoing them! I can say quite seriously that your series is what made blocking and staging click for me. I'm sorry, I hope the repeated messages on your other accounts didn't bother you. If you like I can help do some of the leg work for you (i.e. if you like you can draw over screenshots on a tablet or something and I'll make them all spiffy), I imagine I'd get more out of it than just browsing through them.
