Need help with a sweet wedding set up for my DVX!

If you are looking at quick and light, you might want to check the miller Solo legs. I've got the Aluminum version with a libec H38 head and it rocks. Not too heavy, quick to setup and level and its super stable. The h38 head is the smoothest you'll get in that price range IMO.

As far as mics, I'd go wireless with a g2 (upgrade the mic to something better if can afford it) and run a shotgun like a Rode NTG-1 on top of the camera to get some ambient noise and act as a backup just in case. The 416 is an awesome mic, but perhaps overkill for an on camera mic at a wedding. I havent used one on camera but I imagine its super sharp pickup pattern might give you some odd sound as well. The NTG-1 is a little less tight of a pattern and waaay cheaper.

Ill check out that tripod set up..

so upgrade the wireless lapel to something better on the G2?

ya i think the Rode will be a sweet mic. Whats the main difference between NTG-1 and 2?

Would you say that long cat tail thing is necessary? ha Im at outdoors and wind is not a lot of the time, but sometimes evident.

Yeah the mics that come with the g2 arent all that great. They work, but sound rather muddy and flat. The countryman emw or b3 would be your best bet for a budget mic. With a larger budget I'd go for the sanken cos-11. The countrymans are great mics though. Way better than the stock g2 ones.

NTG-1 and NTG-2 the only real difference is the 2 is longer and can use battery power. If your camera or recorder or mixer has 48v phantom I'd just for the ntg-1. The ntg3 is out too now and is supposed to be pretty sweet but I believe its more expensive. I dont know much else about it.

Yeah if you are going to be outside some I'd get at least a slip on furry. I havent used one of these but they are a good price and get pretty good reviews and they are a site sponsor. http://www.micover.com/store/ Should be enough in light winds and easy to get on and off. Next step up I'd get a full zeppelin. Ktek makes a great low cost one. But for an on camera mic that might be a bit much. I'd really only get a zeppelin if I was using a boom.

I'd also get a 3rd party shockmount for on camera mic. Something that goes in the hotshoe like the rode sm-3. Its not the greatest shock mount but its cheap and will give the mic good support. And you'll of course need a short XLR cable as well.

ok ya there is a package where you get the ntg-1,dead cat cover, and caple for 300. Pretty cheap. the dvx 100b has the phantom power ya?

And ya ill go with the shock mount.. its like 50 bucks. Only thing is i cant put a video on if i have a shock mount.. and reception stuff i have to have a light. What do you think?

With the tripods everyone is saying to spend a good amount of money cause they last forever. So you like the libec H38 for a fluid head? Some of the ones the guys are recommending are like 800 or more for a tripod. Im not at that level yet but i want something i can grow into for sure.

That package will probably great. I dont know the rode deadcat at all, but fur is fur.

Yes, the DVX100 has phantom power so you should be good.

Yeah I didnt think about killing off your ability to have a light up there too. You could get something like the DVTEC multirig. Its a nice way to hold the camera a little steadier and it allows for more mounts and such. There are also bars you can add to the hot shoe that basically add two more 1/4" mounts to the camera. Does the DVX have just a 1/4" mount besides the shoemount? You could put the a light on a noga arm or something similiar. Might be nice to get it up and above the talent a bit anyways.

As far as the tripod. I love mine, but I doubt its as smooth as the fancy several thousand dollar ones. But I get smooth pans and tilts with no stuttering or anything. My main problem now is that much of the time I'm on rails with a battery brick and a large monitor with my hvx and the weight is too much for the head to balance well. But for a bare hvx (or dvx I imagine) its fantastic. Adding a mic and light and you'll still be just fine. Mainly it the rails, 4lb monitor and AB brick that is killing me.

ok awesome sounds rad!

ya its suppose to have a mic mount but i bought it used and the guy didnt have the mic mount. So i just have the shoe mount. Is it going to affect it a lot to have it just on a little mic mount?

See i evenutally will get getting a letus and really small rails. then having a light and mic on it. I wont be putting anything else on it though. So i think your tripod might do well. i wont be using a monitor. and my light is the only thing that might requre a battery to lug around.. what do you think?

My buddy has a hvx with a letus and like really small rails and its awesome. still super easy to lug around and gets sweet shots.

Tripod, etc.

Tripod, etc.

Hi Cory,

The NPO that I work at has a Matthews tripod which they bought for $175. the build isn't like a Manfrotto or even the hi-end stuff like Miller, Vinten, etc. but it works very well. I personally have a matched pair of Manfrotto fluid heads - 701RC2 on Bogen legs. They are not as light weight as the carbon fiber ones, but they work very well and are stable. One of my Bogen tripod legs uses clips so is faster to set up and adjust than the other "traditional" leg (I use with the dolly wheels). Since both my tripods have the same heads, I can switch on the fly between them.

Don't get to caught up on the 35mm DOF adapter. It has limited (but useful) applications in wedding coverages. This is event videography so we are always following actions and events. There's very little time to do anything else unless you have an assistant or a separate day to do mock-ups (adds more time, money & effort). Review your setup carefully in terms of what you really need and make sure you are familiar with every one of them.

I'll check on your work - Im sure its gr8! Cheers!
