Do I need a field monitor

Hi,

Just picked up the HVX200A and about to start shooting a feature. The DoP and Camera Op tell me they need a field monitor but budget is just too stretched now. I guess I have no choice if it really is essential but I was just wondering whether it was that essential? I tend watch the acting in front of me rather than on a monitor but i'm being told they need the monitor for framing, colouring etc, can't this be done on the camera monitor? I'm just wondering if anyone is getting good results without the field monitor?

Thanks

Thanks. Okay, seeing that I do, does it have to be an HD monitor? Can I use a standard def one?

good luck getting critical focus with the built in hvx monitor. rent a good HD monitor like the 17" panasonic, they are like $200 a day or if youre really budget constrained you can buy the ikan v8000HD for about $800. there is a LOT of debate about them, but mine has been working in teh field perfectly for over a year.

at 8" you wont be serving up a dozen people on it. but for 2 or 3 folks, for focus and framing its great. not so accurate for color or exposure though - THAT is what seperates a $800 product from a $3000 product.
