My Latest HVX+Letus music video

Hey guys I shot this in two days, with almost no budget. We were up at the top of the Cuesta Grade in San Luis Obispo, and the sky was extremely red due to the fire up in Big Sur, so most of the sunset footage for the first half is not color corrected at all in any way. Some shots were adjusted for brightness due to the sun setting and constantly changing color etc. I personally think this is my best music video so far, as far as the visuals go.

I know a lot of you hate the style of music, but I would like criticism on the quality of the camerawork, editing, lighting, continuity, etc. it would help me out a lot! So tell me what you think!

Ooooooo, I really liked it. I was expecting a day to night shift in the video somewhere since you were shooting so close to sunset... but when it happened my eyes widened and I even let out a fairly audible "woaaah"... cool shots, your focus was a LOT more spot on in this video than your last. Did you hire out a monitor?

Absolutely great work for a video that had practically no budget... and GREAT work for a video that did have a budget. If this is the quality you can produce with little money, I can't wait to see what you can do with a decent budget!

Thanks man! I didn't rent out a monitor I just took more time, was more careful and less rushed. And I used the focus assist a lot, I practically had it on 40% of the time.

Thanks for the compliments it means a lot and I'm really glad people like my stuff!

there are definitely some great visuals here but I don't think they really flow with this edit.

Do you mean that the visuals would be better fitted for a slower cut and maybe for a more relaxed subject matter? Because I can totally see that. Or was there some kind of editing technique that I used that took away from the quality of the visuals?

I'd say I started off hating this, but mainly for the incongruous tempo changes the band did.. but I'd say that this is such a well conceived piece.. and the music, ableit rather limited.. wasn't too bad. I do have a few issues with the bass line, but that's because I'm a filmmaker wannabe bass player.

Overall.. it's really tight man. I love the fast shutter daytime stuff with the moving cam. Just pops and is a great contrast to the other stuff. Sweet location. This just screams pro, and if they didn't pay you anything the least they can do is barter something for ya.. or fill the belly. This is a good job and you captured something. That's all a music video can really be. A mood, a tingle.. a feeling of essence. Not to be too BS. But that's what it should be anyway, a bigtime slice of style and manipulation over content. You did a fabulous job. I'm sure you see areas that you want to improve and that's really what it should be about as you succeeded and everything else is small tweeks and details.

What was your settings? Flow and how do you like the Letus?

Cheers on a spot on vid!

Thanks a lot man! I'm also a bass player but I haven't been playing as much as I should.

My settings were barry green's "brite" scene file the whole time and then I just did some post color correction, mainly in the "storyline" part where the guy is running around, I desaturated the greens and bumped the contrast.

I love the letus, it makes everything look so nice and I really like having manual focus lenses.

Thanks again for the props, I'm really happy with the response I've got to this video!

patrick, i am a photographer and I shoot fly fishing vid and am looking into the hvx and the possiblities of using my nikon 35mm lenses really caught my attention. I see multiple dof, zoom etc... shots and am wondering if you can give up a little more info on the lenses you used etc...

Thanks so much and congrats. I love the video seriously very very well done.

Thanks man, I'm really glad you liked my music video! I use two lenses: a 17-35mm wide angle zoom lens, and a 50mm 1.4 (great for shallow depth of field)
