KEEP THE NAME! THE DVX IS GREAT!!!

LOSE THE NAME, THE DVX IS GONE!!!

GREAT TASTE!

LESS FILLING!!

Funny! But a misinterpretation of what I was saying. :) That second quote of mine was merely a response to what someone previously posted.

The DVX100/A/B is great in that, as it's aging and for the debate of this forum's name, I see it slowly becoming more of a symbol of a revolutionary period within the indie film scene.

On the same hand, because technology is moving forward, the DVX100/A/B is becoming a tool that less film makers are using because there are newer and (arguably) better options available and coming.

So, I think keeping the name as a tribute to what the DVX100 brought to the world is fitting.

This is awful. I just bought a brand new DVX100b, and now it's outdated?

I knew I should have waited for the Scarlet 3.5k in 2009 to make a purchase.

EDIT: I meant the Scarlet 3.5k at the END of 2009.

DC: I agree with the first two points, just not the third. We are on the tail end of "DVX" meaning "revolution". We are on the cusp of it meaning "obsolete".

Like I mentioned before, WE all know it was the revolution. To the guy that get's into filmmaking tomorrow, "DVX" only means "outdated" and "behind the times".

"well....sonny.... I remember the days when we didnt HAVE 24p for less than sixty thousand dollars.... the dvx100 changed all that for us."

"uh.... yeah grandpa... you told me that. But I'm shooting Scarlet3 in full frame 8k and it cost me $2k. I love you grandpa, but you're living in the past."

"damn kids these days...."

The DVX makes pictures JUST AS GOOD as it always did. It just is no longer the cutting edge of low cost SD cameras. New cameras didnt change the DVX at all, that doesnt mean that it isnt outdated, though. But yeah... when you buy a camera when the used cost hits HALF of it's original street price, you are buying old technology.

I guess what's really sad is that the bandage is still stuck to my fresh, gooey DVuser tatoo...

Seriously though, for my porpoises the DVX was the best choice. I was stuck between jumping on the EX3 wagon or diving into 16mm film. Since I'm never ever going to be doing any corporate work, I figured there's no reason for an overpriced powersuit. So yeah, the DVX is still a fine little camera, but everyone still goes apeshi* over more pixels.

Anyhow, where were we? Oh yeah, back on topic- KEEP THE NAME! Call me old fashioned, but I'd probably cry if I logged in and the background was a different color, or if the search engine wasn't still "handicapped." And yes, I said "porpoises."

Anyone who thinks this site is still about the dvx100 needs their head examined.

we tried the name change thing. didn't go over so well. lot more to it than you think.

The user name is a brand name. It's becoming an empire in the world of online filmmaking communities. DVXuser is the largest of it's kind. doesn't matter what the name is. Content is king, and we are recognizable by this name. I have spoken to many who don't associate it with a specific camera. Just the name of a kick ass site that they learn a lot from. <jason cliche> xerox, scotch tape, kleenex </jason cliche>

If the name ever needs to be changed, it will be and it will be done right and at the right time. You can't build up something that has such a strong identity over 6 years and is now spreading to other sites and then turn it upside down by changing the name. Brands have impact and more power than you realize. Changing the name to be more representative of what the size has grown to be may just have the opposite effect of what you think.

Anyways.... might help to ask the owner of the site to change the name if you actually know how to spell his :)

later,
jason

Hehehehehehe. I refrained from comment on that issue...

Oh, but I agree with Jason's post. If I am not mistake, this is also what Timur meant earlier.

EDIT:

...ANd thanks for fixing your avatar penguin. Never was sure what your last one was about... you and your brightly colored friends staring at the lonesome gray dude... ok...

No, no, no Jeff. When my custom title was changed I decided to represent the loneliness I was feeling by putting up that avatar. I was the gray guy and all of you were staring at me like I was some sort of outcast. It obviously was a joke...but it was a joke that made sense! Gosh! :D

Correct. Like a said, people already here. I'm thinking of NEW users/members. Growth.

Again, I dont suggest burning the house down and leaving town, continue to direct dvxuser.com to the site - THE SAME EXACT SITE... just DIFFERENT NAME - and people will learn the new name. No one is going to get confused and leave.

Actually, I take that back. I've read the posts here. Everyone will get confused.

ie
...for my porpoises the DVX was the best choice.

For my dolphins I need HD.

As for your avatar, Penguin, it was The Shat we objected to. With the other new one, we just thought that was your way of telling us you were moving to West Hollywood. (Rainbow people...... forget it.)

Excellent point.

But then it comes down to "brand recognition." So I don't see "DVXUser" going away (in name) anytime soon. Like I said, I personally think of the current name as more of a "tip of the hat" to the DVX100 and I do dig the fact that the forum specializes in Panasonic cameras.

I dont mean to argue, but points just keep being made that I feel I need to respond to.

Only among people that come here already. There is so DVXUser regognition beyond that. All facial tissue users know about Kleenex. If they changed their name, it would hurt them. Not all independent filmmakers know about DVXUser. Part of that might be that they are not interested in the DVX100. HV20.com might have a lot of useful content for me, but I dont know since I'm not interested in the HV20.

No dude you were definitely the pink guy in your avatar.

I don't understand why many members would care either way?

At this point it's just like any other product name to me... like Wammo! or Coke. This "business" was built on a brand... and now that it's much bigger then that they could choose to abandon the snowball that's growing in the liklihood that a new snowball could be formed and quickly grow to size... but why bother?

I'm sure that this site is successful beyond the wildest dreams of what Jarred originally expected... and it's growing by leaps and bounds all the time... so what's the incentive to A) take an unnecessary risk? and B) take on a new workload and responsibility when things are going so smoothly?

Do you expect that if the name were changed THEN the site would be successful? Do you figure that there are many people who google an answer, get directed here, and then read the url and say "nope, not a DVX owner...".

Seriously... what difference does it make and what are the pros beyond the current name sounding limiting to some people? What is to gain in changing the name? It's possible that the growth rate is already ideal for "the core group" to handle things comfortably... and then again... maybe eventually they will change the name, but just aren't ready yet.

At this point in time I'd bet the headaches would outweigh the benefits. A few years back I remember some kind of hicup on a site revision... and I don't know if this site is a full-time job for somebody... but I'm sure they know what they're doing and if they felt a name change was in their best interests they would do it.

Jason, out of sheer curiousity, was there any particular name that was selected when a name change was discussed?

BTW thanks Sad Max for trying to add some validity to my idea by making it german.

What do you guys recommend for shooting manatees? HDV? Digibeta? Harpoon?

Most of your question have been answered already, Matt, but I'll address one point:

Do you figure that there are many people who google an answer, get directed here, and then read the url and say "nope, not a DVX owner...".
Not necessarily. However I just Googled "independent filmmaking forum" and dvxuser wasn't listed until page 6. And even then, I'm more inclined to go somewhere that sounds like it meets my needs as opposed to a site named after an obsolete camera that is listed on page 6 of a search.

Oh...sorry... one other point.

I don't understand why many members would care either way?

I dont care. It doesnt affect me at all.

The shat was a one-day deal, it was always intended to be that way. I saw that frame and I just had to put it there to confuse people. When I was in LA, I saw several very "colorful" people, so I know where you are going with that, by the way. :)
