Somebody I know just bought an XH-A1, based on the glowing reviews of a some camera store clerks...who in the process bashed the HVX. Basically saying it was a slightly worse camera that cost $1500 more.

Although I know theres not a clear cut answer on this, I've felt quite depressed about this for a while now...

Any reason to feel otherwise?

Everyone has the option to buy whatever they want. I saw this camera as my way to get a varicam jr quality cam and its been that and more. He had the option to test them. I saw the other options to the HVX and made a somewhat educated decision. Just like next time.. it'll be a new camera with a different set of interesting qualitys. For a lot of people it's the 170, the EX series or the Scarlet. Now that's some interesting stuff to think about there, and maybe Canon might have something to compete and JVC? Do they still even make cams anymore

don't worry about what some store clerk tells your friend...

You have a great camera, with a ton of features for the price point. The first sub-10k camera to shoot DVCPRO HD. The first solid state camcorder. Variable framerates, and a ton of different shooting formats... from dv and dvcpro to dvcpro 50. And, DVCPRO HD in 720p 24p, 30p, or 60p. 1080 60i, 30p, 24p, etc....

Dude. Don't bother with what they say. don't bother with comparing your camera to other cameras. You have a great little camera. Turn your frown upside down, and get out and shoot something and make use of your new toy. They are both good cameras, but they are different beasts. Don't waste your time and energy fretting over silly stuff like that. Rule #1.

There are lots of opinions out there. I had a guy locally tell me that I shouldn't get an hvx b/c there was no software under 25 grand that could edit it... Never mind that I got a mediocre laptop, and a 1,000 dollar piece of software and have been happily editing multiple streams of 1080 footage in real time ever since... Just an example.

Don't worry what other people say. Just be happy with your purchase. Make some money and upgrade to a 200a, or an HPX170, or a Scarlet or whatever floats your boat in the future.

Jason

I know...but it's irking...especially since the guy that bought is basically gloating about the fact that I got "ripped off".

Its childish of me, but I can't shake it.

The clerks convinced him that the HVX doesn't shoot true HD, while the xh-a1 does...is there truth to this?

Is DVCPro HD over HDV a worthwhile advantage of the HVX at all?

Perhaps you should have done more thorough research before dropping 5 grand so you could be more confident in your purchase. It doesn't matter what other people say. You have a great tool in your hands... Tell the dude to f' off and go make some money or movies, or whatever it is you want to do.

It's about getting the right tool to suit your needs. Opinions are like .... well you know the rest.

Forget about it, dude. Be happy. The A1 vs HVX stuff is pretty old and tired... Now it's HVX vs EX1... soon HVX200a vs. EX1 and eventually HPX170 vs EX1... and later.... Scarlet vs. everything :) Don't sweat the camera wars. You didn't get ripped off. There are many a folk on this board who have made money hand over fist with the HVX, and I'm sure the same is true for the A1. Content is king. Guy on this board was nominated for an oscar the last two years in a row... Do you know what he shot with? A "measly old, outdated, SD only" DVX100.

I keep hearing people say that the HVX doesn't shoot real HD when they are trying to sell you HDV cameras. WTF! Seriously, if you look at the specs HDV is much less "HD" compared to "DVXPROHD" which shoots with a 4:2:2 colorspace where as HDV has long GOPs and an MPEG2 compression with a 4:2:0 colorspace, to me that is simply unacceptable.

Why do they say this though? How can they make such a bold statement that is untrue?
