can i use my mac book pro laptop as an hd production monitor? im a newbie, just wondering.

thanks for the reply Aroon! i am using the hvx200 so i do need a monitor capable of hd resolution on set.

Use adobe OnLocation on a PC Laptop and get also a bunch of powerfull tools!

sounds like an advertisement :p

i just got a mac, no reason in taking a step backwards at this point. besides, i do not have $ to burn. this is not an invitation to argue over mac vs pc mind you!!

You'll need a program like Capture Magic, ScopeBox, or DV Monitor. You can download trial versions of all three. Make sure you get the HD versions if you're using the HVX. I suppose you could use iMovie, but, eh... it's iMovie.

I use Monitor Magic (bigmugsoftware.com) which just monitors your video and gives you scopes, I've used it pretty successfully to judge focus and monitor scopes. At $89 its a real bargain too!

so let me get this straight: i can use my mac book as a monitor by using one of the aforementioned softwares just as long as i am not recording to the mac book right? i will be using the same mac book to offload footage onto, is this ok as long as i do it at seperate times as using it as a monitor?

thanks to everyone for replying to this thread!

i tryed the mac as a monitor and it was crap. throw down and buy a hd ikan 8in monitor . then you can see what your shooting.

There are different versions, some for just monitoring and others for monitoring and capturing either SD or HD footage. Check the links out to see which would work best for you. I'm not sure what they currently have, as I'm battling an extraordinary hangover at the moment, and even the most mundane tasks are presenting me with some real problems. Good luck!
