Music Video, redrock and hvx200

thanks for the kind words. I'm going to be shooting another vid very soon. I learned a lot from this, being my first music video, so I'm excited to apply everything I learned to this coming video I'm shooting.

I too liked the puppet concept, although I think you could have done a little more with it. Some stop motion or something other than stringing him outside of frame. Still, I really liked the finish with the paper graves - nice little homemade touch. As for the performance stuff, the colors looked great, very good contrast from the stenciled background. I thought the lead's face was a bit too shrouded in black due to the big hat and directional lighting. Since you are selling the band and all, a little more fill probably would have helped.

Did you really use a Redrock on this? The DOF looked perfectly wide throughout, which isn't a criticism since it all looked great, I was just expecting more focal isolation given the title of the thread.

This looks very professional and you should be proud. Link me up when your new video hits!

I really liked some of the performance shots, mainly the wide ones of the band playing. Had a weird cool vibe, but that seemed to be lost on some of the close ups and the shots in the bathtub.

I guess here are a list of things that I would have thought about doing.

-Cut more! Faster! Especially towards the end I felt like you could have pounded a bit harder than you did.
-The shots of the page really killed whatever energy you had going. To me it was like when things were just picking up, I'd be stopped by this page and have to desperately read it as fast as I could. Maybe doing this without a book or with on screen text could have been better? I don't know if the book was integral to your idea, but...you get the idea.
-The color correction on some of the clips seemed pretty inconsistent. The wide shots looked great on the performance shots, but when you cut to the close-ups, the saturation went way down. Some of the shots also had a strange purple cast to them.
-I don't know if I'm just a high shutter fan boy, but maybe give it a shot? You may of but I missed it, but I think you can bust it out in any music video and be doing good.
-A bit more fill would be nice. I keep going back and forth on some sort of kicker or rim, I also feel like introducing some color into that performance scene might have been a good idea.
-Try and get a bit more ratio on the puppet outside. Silk overhead, bring it a silked silver card and then use some negative fill if you have to. He's doing drugs, it should be a little moody! On second inspection to, I think it's the fact that your footage is sooo clean when all this is going on. Play with CC a bit more, muddle it up a little bit. It's too crisp to be what it is.
-I'm adding this one in last minute, but I feel like this piece is goofy enough to go the wes anderson/jean pierre jeunet route. Get out your wide angle and get it as close to the lead singers face as possible, tell him to continue to rock out. Awesomeness will ensue (as long as you watch for lens flare.)

Really, you do have quite a cool piece. It's definitely got it's strengths, but I think like we all do all the time, you missed a few things. For a first music video, definitely awesome. Keep it up man. Interested in seeing your next one.

By the way, redrock?

Jeez, 3.5. A better question is what kind of lights did you have? 10k's?

Ryan, that's the kind of constructive criticism I was looking for, I appreciate it. I will definitely take those factors into consideration on my next video.

I was going to ask the same thing. I can never seem to get enough light through with me RRM2 and I usually use my Nikon 50mm 1.4. How did you get it so well lit and sharp?

well, I was shooting with 3 arrlite 2ks, and a Lowell dp kit. So I had lots of light. I was actually shooting at 5.6 on my lens, and around that on the HVX also, can't remember exactly.
