720p vs 1080i size puzzle

I'm puzzled. 720p gives me 34 minutes on 2 16GB cards, but 1080i/24pa gives me 53 minutes. I thought 1080 gave 10+% MORE resolution, and thus FEWER minutes. Why not?
 
I think you may have to re-check your numbers. 1080 cannot give you more than about 34 minutes on two cards.

720p mode should give you the same 34 minutes. 720pN mode should give you between 68 and 85 minutes on those cards.
 
Oops! Yes, I had a 32GB and a 16GB card in there instead of the 2 16GBS. Dang, they should color-code these P2 cards, so that I can tell the sizes apart.
