New Multi Standard P2 Camera Announced, Panasonic, Europe

Hi All

Just to let everyone know I was talking to Panasonic europe expressing my frustration about the HVX-200P not being able to shoot in 50i (PAL) and they told me they are releasing a new multi standard camera in September.

The Panasonic HVX-171 will be able to shoot 50i as well as 60i and still be using P2 cards. The chip set is also improved being able to shoot in low light situations. The tape compartment will be removed so no more DV tape but I think we saw that coming.

The downside, this camera is only available to be sold in Europe, North America will have it's own version released around the same time the HVX-170 but will not be muti- standard.

BOOOOOO to panasonic. :zombie_smiley:

obviously, this is a marketing sh!t. they won't make the model in NTSC countries a switchable one because they want to profit more on the overpriced cams being sold in europe. :(

Hey, we don't even know if this is true. As far as I'm concerned, this is currently hearsay (no offense to the poster). If he means an HPX171 for Europe that is switchable, I'll wait to hear it confirmed (or denied) by Jan or some other official Panasonic source.

I don't how much stock I put in that rumor. It seems to me that would be a pretty big slap in the face for a lot of people that are on the fence whether to replace their HVX in September or wait until spring for Scarlet.

If it's true, and it's the same price as the HPX170, that would indeed be rather face-slappy. But if it's significantly more expensive, and the price difference is the same or more than a factory upgrade (assuming there IS a factory upgrade to switchability) then I don't know that I'd necessarily have a problem with it; I mean, what's wrong with a more expensive camera doing more than a less expensive camera does? In fact, I'd probably think that was the right way to go -- those who need the switchability pay for it, those who don't get a less expensive product (i.e., don't have to pay for something they're not going to use.)

So -- A, let's see some confirmation from Panasonic on this. B, if it does get confirmed, let's find out what the price difference is. C, let's find out if Pansonic USA is offering either switchability or a factory upgrade, and what that costs.

Until we know the answer to all three, there's really not much to even say.

I'm with Barry on this one, and

nothing would make me happier than to hear there is a switchable version of this camera, wether it be a factory upgrade, or a different model, I really don't care, and i think it IS VERY FAIR to charge more for such a product, and I will gladly pay the difference to get a switchable HPX170/

If this happens and the price is much higher (given that Pal cameras are already more expensive that NTSC ones) would be a downside for me, as I don't need that option as of this moment.......and If this happens and only pal cameras get it I would see this as a very bad movement........ I would prefer a factory upgrade......if sometime I need this option I would pay something more later and get it.

This is still weird though, I mean, why is it called the HPX171? That's the second time someone's said that, and that doesn't follow their normal naming pattern at all. So maybe there's some truth to this, and it's like what JVC did with their HD100 and HD101; HD100 was less expensive but didn't have firewire input enabled, HD101 cost more and did have firewire input enabled. So maybe Panasonic Europe is going to have an HPX170E, non-switchable, and a more-expensive HPX171 that is switchable? That seems like that'd make sense and make everyone happy.

*well, every European, that is. We on this side of the pond are still waiting to hear if we can have switchability through an upgrade or whatever...

that would be great, two options, if you need get the more expensive, if not you have the ceahper........
