IEEE 1394 Not Being Recognized

Today when I went to capture some footage from my DVX I could not get my computer to recognize the camera. When I plug the cord into the camera, all of the lights on the camera light u, which makes me think all of the connections from the computer and the camera are working fine. But when I turn the camera on, the computer still does not recognize it.

Any idea what might be wrong? I never unplug the camera without turning it off first, so I can't think of anything else that might be wrong.

Thanks.

Try this if you haven't already. Turn off your computer shutdown. Plug in your firewire cord again then plug it into your camera. Turn your computer on then power your camera. This may do the trick.

That didn't work. Thanks though. This time the other lights on the camera didn't work either. Could the cord possibly be faulty? I don't see it being the camera, as I don't see what could have happened. The pins in the firewire port seem to be in fine condition, yet, it didn't work on another computer either. I'm a bit worried. Should I try picking up another firewire cord?

Could be the cord but could also be the firewire port. Thoes are very sensitve and tend to go out if you don't set everything up properly. I would try another cord if you have one for sure.

I would have to buy another one. Yet, the fact that when I was first plugging it in, the lights on the camera were lighting up (The lights that signify whether it's in vcr or camera, the one on the back of the top handle, etc), makes me think that it's not a problem with the camera. I don't know though, I hope it's not. It is only about three months old.

Not sure if you did or not never plugin the cord to your camera while the computer is on. This can fry the port. Lights on the camera don't really have much to do with it all.

Nope, I always had it off before plugging it in. I mentioned the lights just because it was reacting to plugging the cord in, which had me believing the camera's firewire port was at least recognizing the cord.

Seems odd I ran out of ideas. Next thing I would do is use another fire wire and hope its not your firewire port.

sorry hope you figure it out.

I am having that problem on my HVX! So you are supposed to have your computer off when you plug in the camera?!

Well, when I plug in my camera, my computer recognizes the camera, but Premiere can't control my camera in the capture mode, is this related? (it's not the cable, I bought a new one)

Never plug a camera into a computer that is powered ON.

You may have a blown, or partially blown, firewire port on the PC. Try installing a new firewire card. That's what I had to do to get my DVX100a to connect again.

What version of Premiere? Did it work before?

A 4 pin to 4 pin connection is data to data. However, if you're computer end is 6 pin which inidicates power is supplied as well then sooner or later if you plug in while hot, (both devices are powered up) you'll fry your firewire circuits, (either on the computer or on the camera).

This issue has been brought up a number of times on this board and serveral people have fried their camera firewire circuits to a crisp. This is just the latest round.

Yeah, happened to me. Luckily it wasn't my DVX100a connected to the PC -- it was my cheap MiniDV cam that I use as a capture deck. Learned the lesson quick, though. Blew out ports on both the camera and the PC.

Always power off to connect or disconnect!

Well, I fixed the problem - it was a software issue, there was another program conflicting with Premiere for use of the 1394 port so that everytime I plugged the camera in, the other program would take over and not allow Premiere to "see" it.

I actually had to fix it in the registry by refreshing the 1394 device listings.

I found a great article on Adobe here... Adobe Knowledgebase article

Im having this problem too. Connected and captured fine in Sony Vegas 8. Lent the camera to a friend, now the computer wont detect the device, which to me seems like a setting in the camera. Is there an option in the menu to turn the firewire port on or off?
