cheap minidv as tape deck

Hi
I'm about to purchase a minidv camcorder that has firewire from Craigslist to use as a tape deck, so that my dvx heads aren't overly used playing back and capturing.

It's the DCR-TRV17 by SoNY.

I will be taking a laptop and and my panny tape to test out if the heads for drop outs or anything unusual.

Is there anything I should consider?

The fact that the camcorders are different brand names isn't going affect my dvx will it (i'll be using only the same model panny tapes)?

is there an issue with codecs or any exporting formats?

the LCD is cracked, but who cares it'll just be for capturing.

nope it will just read exactly whats on the tape regardless
theres only issues between hd on an sd camera (I believe)
find out what tapes the camera has mostly been used with
and stick to the same type to keep the heads lasting for as long as you can
since different brands use different lubricants (wet or dry) on the tapes

you mean the heads from the sony handycam can lube up my tape?

bc i plan on using the MQs, and only those, so will putting the tape in the sony "taint" the tape and ruin the dvx heads when i put the tape back in the dvx?

Done for years

Done for years

I've been doing exactly that for at least three years. Never any issues at all, and I know of people who will insist the lubricant issue isan older issue that is no longer a factor. Having said that, I use only Panasonic tapes in my DVX but I'vce used all kinds of cheap camcorders to monitor.

The tapes will either be dry or wet lubricated depending on what type of tape
and it has been said in the past that switching between different brands (i.e different types of lubricated tapes) would cause more head wear on the camera. i use my capture cam with any tapes i have too, but i will make sure i only use panasonic ones in my dvx

i dont think the capture cam will "taint" the tape, i was just saying you should stick with the same tape as much as possible and it will keep the heads of the camera working better, for a longer time
