Would it be wise to rent a HVX for twilight having never worked with p2?

I was wondering how much sense it made to shoot my twilight fest film in HD when I really don't know anything about the workflow regarding HD and the p2 cards.

Well yes, if you want to go that way. A 6 min short is a perfect place to try out new things and stretch what you know.

Besides, it's not that big a deal. FCP will handle the footage.

Just make sure you read a couple pages of posts and all the stickies in the HVX section. Have a reasonable idea of what you are doing before you go into it.

And shoot early! Don't wait till Oct. 20th to try it, shoot early enough that you have time to explore the workflow without an impending deadline looming.

It really is quite easy -- shove the P2 card in, record, and then copy the files off the card to your computer and open in FCP (or whatever NLE you're using). Much faster and easier than capturing from tape!

Judging from the stickies, P2 to Mac isnt that cut and dry. Has that changed?

I haven't had any problems dealing with P2 on my Macs. I've worked with both Premiere CS3 and Final Cut Pro 5/6 with very little pain (other than problems with Log & Transfer due to having an old version of FxFactory)

Cool. Since it won't take me a month to shoot this I will get the ball rolling on renting the HVX. I want to try it and at least learn before I pick up the HPX in October. Production begins in late August. Script is in final stages and actors are secured as well as locations. thanks.

I'm not saying that you or anyone else is "having problems".

I'm saying that according to the stickies, it isnt as cut and dry as this:

...then copy the files off the card to your computer and open in FCP...

These two points by Barry lead me to believe that your simplistic advice is setting someone up for possible disaster.

First, let's talk about what you simply must not do.
1) NEVER put a P2 card into a Mac, or into a reader or camera connected to a Mac, unless you have first write-protected the P2 card. Failing to do so will result in the Mac's OS writing files to your card, which apparently can cause file corruption when you copy the files over.

2) DO NOT use Finder to drag and drop the contents of the card over. I don't care that this has worked for you in the past, and I guarantee that people who have glitches do not care that this has worked for you in the past. Apple, Panasonic, and DVXUser all say don't do it. If you use Finder to drag & drop, any glitching that results is your own fault.

Filthrich, I just recommend you read the stickies in the HVX section. It's better than listening to overly simplistic advice. Regardless of whether Mark and Tim have no problems.
