Shot in Berlin. I wrote four of these. Will release them all if I get any feedback on here. In the cutting room now (i.e. my bed).

Haven't got a chance to watch the whole thing, but the video quality looks awesome for the DVX. Would you mind sharing your scene settings for this?

i very much enjoyed this - i loved the overall look of it - and i like how she was not interacting with people yet she was narrating with subtitles, and that kept my attention - i also liked the points of view and what she was saying, very interesting little film here

Thanks a lot--

It is a nice look for the DVX, I enjoyed the story, and enjoyed your shots. Nice camera angles and compostions and a very filmic look. Well done mate.

Thanks, Shaun. Glad to do shoot with a plain old DVX and do it proud. Who needs adapters anyway?

I'd challenge people to put down the adapter for a turn and try to achieve the film look with color. That's a huge part of it.

well done short.. err vignette. I don't go to the university, but i'm in the princeton area during my breaks from school. i'd like to film something there, maybe someday soon.

this is perfect. the mood, the feeling, the girl, everything. i have to say the v/o was very well acted. i was dp on a film recently that was all v/o and although the acting was decent, the voice over sounded like they were reading from a book... so well done!

would like to see the other three

also why didn't you use your adapter? you have the LEX right?
time constraints, insufficient lighting, no zoom lenses?

@ jmz-lmi: thanks, i'm in berlin until september, but i'll be back in princeton from then until next may, except for a bit in california and chicago during the winter. always looking for someone to shoot with.

@jenningsp: thanks a lot. i think the key to a good v/o is having them read the text...over and over and over. by the fifth take or so, she was really beginning to believe what she was saying. that's the moment i look for. i'll be glad to release the other three now that i know people are taking the time to watch.

as to the adapter, two of the other three vignettes i'll release are shot with the good old LEX. as to my reasons for not using it, mostly lighting. i didn't want to shoot in the day, but at dusk the LEX is so light hungry it takes away from the picture. i just sold it to someone on here actually because i'm shooting a documentary series for a company and won't really need the film look until fall. also, i want to switch to the sgpro, which i think gets closer to the 16mm look.

i think it's a really good exercise to go adapterless - helps you look for the other elements that make the picture less digital and, i would say, impersonal.

thanks a lot again for watching.

Anybody have suggestions about the subtitles? Were they distracting? I had to create the template myself and don't know how functional they are.

Also, anyone in Berlin currently? Looking to shoot a narrative short next month...

The subs were fine. There is a program that anime fansubbers use called Aegisub that is super easy to use and can utilize every font already installed on your PC along with shadow effects and what not. Makes them look real professional. If you're unhappy with the current ones I would deffinitly look into it.

Loved it by the way. It looked amazing.

Oh I've got tons of stuff. Rice paddies, fuji, my international school, mountain rivers, all stock footage on dozens of tape.

Im heading to Tokyo this weekend to visit my brother, and attend the Star Wars Celebration Japan. I'll be sure to film some of the hot spots around there. Now that I see there is demand for some Japanese scenery I'll start posting! =D

Make sure you check back :)

Damn the French language is so beautiful.

Beautifully shot! The writing made this one for me.
Thanks. Been watching quite a bit of Godard lately. I think having the film in a second language gives you a healthy distance. It's strange, but making films in English just doesn't feel right yet. Don't know why.

JM,

You sir are an artist! You do so much without words it makes me shudder to think what you'd be capable of with a narrative.
