Liquid uppgrade to Mediacomposer

As former Liquid user and currently using Edius 4.63 I am curious to compare these to Media Composer. As known Avid has uppgrade deal of 760 € discount to Liquid users. How MC compares to Edius 4,6? Here is what I am missing in Edius:
1. Keyframable filters
2. DVD authoring
3. Better media management and more fluid mediausage between projects.
4. Straight to timeline camera stabilisation
5. Sort of easier colorcorrection between shots in the project

MC seems to have al these plus Boris filters wiht a price that is very competive to Liquid users. If I would't already have Edius Liquid to MC would be the obvious choice. Any opinons?

1. You can keyframe all the effects in Avid. When you upgrade to Media Composer you also get the Boris Continuum Complete effects package, and AvidFX, which is Boris RED renamed. Both are great effects packages that have more keyframing options than you can imagine.

2. DVD Authoring--Media Composer 3.0 comes with Sorenson Squeeze 5.0 so you can transcode your quicktime exports from Avid to MPEG2 files for DVD burning, and it comes with AvidDVD by Sonic (PC only) to author and burn your DVDs.

3. Avid's media management is the best in the business. It handles all of your media management for you--it creates specific folders that all media goes into, then creates database files to track it. You pick the drive you want your media to go to and it takes care of the rest. It operates completely different than Edius, though, so if you run into problems or have questions about it be sure to ask.

4. You can stabilize your shots once they're in the timeline by using the stabilize motion effects.

5. Avid's color correction is very nice (no secondary color correction in Media Composer, though). You have curves, auto correct, color match, etc... and you can save your color effects to your bin. You cannot apply the color correction to the source clip in Media Composer (you can in Symphony, the step up from MC), but you can drag a saved effect to multiple clips at once.

I haven't used Liquid, so I can't comment about how it compares to Media Composer, and but I have used Edius and there's no comparison. As as editor and all around suite of software, Media Composer blows Edius out of the water. If you have a reseller near you, try to get a demo. I think you'll like it.

Yes, I sort of though that MC must be a good choice. Must also remember that Avids trainingprograms are way better compared to Edius. The reason to go to Edius was P2. It did a good job on P2 already when the others were behind. Now I think MC handles P2 alright?

Media Composer handles P2 well.

You can import the master clips and edit directly off the card (but the media will be offline if you shut down the project and come back to it, so edit off the card if you plan on finishing all in one go--like in news).

Otherwise, you can import the master clips, choose the ones you want (or all of them) and import the media to your media drives from within Avid. The nice thing about this is that you can transcode too, so you have full raster files in DNxHD (Avid's high def codec). You'll get better realtime this way too.

Edius does an amazing job of supporting new formats--I'll definitely give it that. But as far as the editing experience goes, I just couldn't get into it. I used it when I worked in news, and it was good a turn and burn scenario, but trying to do promotion editing was tough. It just didn't have enough meat there.

Let us know what you end up doing, and if you have further questions about Media Composer.

Michael.
